Lightweightdesignofautomobilecomponentusinghighstrengthsteelbasedondentresistance
Abstract
Lightweightandcrashworthinessaretwoimportantaspectsofauto-b-odydesign.Inthispaper,basedontheshallowshelltheory,theexpress-ionofdentresistancestiffnessofdoublecurvaturedshallowshellisobt-ainedundertheconcentratedloadcondition.Thecriticalloadsresultingi-nthelocaltrivialdentinthecenteroftheshallowshellisregardedastheimportantindexforthelightweightoftheautomobileparts.Thisruleisappliedtothelightweightdesignofbumpersystembyusinghighstre-ngthsteelinsteadofmildsteel.Thecrashworthinesssimulationoftheli-ghtweightpartprovesthevalidityofthelightweightingprocess.

1.Introduction
Inrecentyears,theretainingnumberofautomobileshasbeenincre-asingsteadily,whichhasimpactedthesocietyandhumanlifegreatly.S-uchsituationleadstomanysevereproblemssuchasfuelcrisis,environ-mentpollution.Theinternationalassociationofaluminumstatedthatpetr-olconsumptioncandecreaseby8–10%with10%reductionofcarweig-ht[2].Thus,automobilelightweightisabasicwaytofuelsaving.
Inordertoreducetheautomobileweight,therearetwoimportantmethods[3]:
One,automobilepartsareredesignedtooptimizethestruc-ture.Byusingthinning,hollowing,minitype,andcompoundparts,carwe-ightcanbereduced.Theother,moreandmorelightweightmaterials,s-uchasaluminumalloy,highstrengthsteel,compositematerial,arewide-lyusedaslightweightmaterialstoreplacethetraditionalmaterialslikemildsteel[4].Thesematerialscouldreducetheweightremarkably.Mat-erialreplacementisgenerallymoreeffectiveinautomobilelightweightingthanstructuremodification.Withtheintroductionofautomobilesafetyleg-islation,crashworthinessandsafetyshouldbeconsideredaspreconditio-nsinlightweightingdesignofauto-body.Highstrengthsteeliswidelyus-edinautomobilereplacingthetraditionalmaterialofmildsteel.
Highstrengthsteelsheetcanbeusedinauto-bodytoimprovecom-ponents_impactenergyabsorptioncapacityandresistancetoplasticdef-ormation.Theautomobileweightcanbereducedbyuseofhighstrengthsteelsheetofathinnerthicknesstoreplacethemildsteelsheetofbo-dyparts[1,3].Comparingwithaluminum,magnesium,andcompositemat-erials,highstrengthsteelhasbettereconomyinthatitsrawmaterialan-dfabricationcostarecheaper.Besides,highstrengthsteelcanbedirec-tly
usedinproductlineincludingforming,wielding,assembling,andpainting.Theoperatingcostcanbesavedsincethereisnoneedadjustingthewholeline
Outsideofautomobilebody,thereareseveralsheetmetalPanels,mostofwhichareshallowpanels.Dentresistanceistheabilitytoretain-theshapeagainstsunkendeflectionandlocaldentundertheexternalforce.Dentresistanceofautomobilepanelsbecomesanimportantissueandqualitycriterion.Therefore,dentresistancestiffnessofautomobilep-anelsshouldbetestedandevaluatedintheprocessofpaneldesignan-dmanufacture.Somereportedmethodsoftestingarelistedbelow[6–8]:
1.Testthedisplacementofsunkendeflectionfpunderfixedexternalforc-e
2.Testtheexternalforceftoobtainfixeddisplacementofsunkendefle-ction.
3.Testtheslopeofforce–displacementcurveunderexternalload.
Inthisstudy,thesecondmethodwillbeused.Therestofthispaperisorganizedasfollows:
InSection2,theexpressionofdentresistancestiffnessofdoublecurvaturedshallowshellisobtainedundertheconcentratedloadconditionbasedontheshallowshelltheory.Thecriticalloadresultinginthelocaltrivialdentinthecenteroftheshallowshellisregardedastheimportantevaluatingindexforthedentresistanceoftheautomobileparts.ThisruleisappliedinSection2tothelightweightingdesignofbumpersystembyusinghighstrengthsteelinsteadofmildsteelwithcrashworthinesssimulation.
2.Dentresistanceanalysisofdoublecurvaturedshallowshell
2.1.Dentresistancestiffnessanalysisofshallowshell
Shellwithmidsurfacecanbecharacterizedintothreefeatures:
thicknessh,midsurfacedimensionL,curvatureradiusr,whichsatisfiesh/r_1.Whenthereexistsh/L_1,theshellcanbedefinedasthinshell.IfL/r_1isaddedbesidestheabovetwoconditions,thethinshellisregardedasshallowshell[10].
AsFig.1shows,theplanex–yistheprojectionofthemidsurfaceofshallowshellalongthez-axis.SupposingMisanarbitrarypointonmidsurface,twoplanesQMN&PMNaremadeparallelingtocoordinateplaneOYZandOXZ,respectively.ThetwoedgesPMandQMcanberegardedapproximatelyasverticalbecauseofmidsurface_sflatness.Atthesametime,theline
