Schoolshavetraditionallyplayedanimportantroleincreatingnationalunityand“Americanizing”themillionsofimmigrantswhohavepouredintothiscountryfrommanydifferentbackgroundsandorigins.Schoolsstillplayalargeroleinthecommunity,especiallyinthesmalltowns.
Theapproachtoteachingmayseemunfamiliartomany,notonlybecauseitisinformal,butalsobecausethereisnotmuchemphasisonlearningfacts.Instead,Americanstrytoteachtheirchildrentothinkforthemselvesandtodeveloptheirownintellectualandcreativeabilities.Studentsspendmuchtime,learninghowtouseresourcematerials,libraries,statisticsandcomputers.Americansbelievethatifchildrenaretaughttoreasonwellandtoresearchwell,theywillbeabletofindwhateverfactstheyneedthroughouttherestoftheirlives.Knowinghowtosolveproblemsisconsideredmoreimportantthantheaccumulationoffacts.
