美国人的婚礼
WeddingsinTheUnitedStates
WeddingsintheUnitedStatesvaryasmuchasthepeopledo.Therearechurchweddingswithagreatdealoffanfare;thereareweddingsonmountain-topswithguestsbarefooted;andtherehavebeenweddingsontheoceanfloorwithoxygentanksfortheguests.Butmanyweddings,nomatterwhereorhowtheyareperformed,includecertaintraditionalcustoms.
Beforeacoupleismarried,theybecomeengaged.Andtheninvitationsaresenttothosewholivenearby,theirclosefriendsandtheirrelativeswholivefaraway.Wheneverythingisready,thencomesthemostexcitingmoment.
Theweddingitselfusuallylastsbetween20and40minutes.Theweddingpartyentersthechurchwhiletheweddingmarch[1]isplayed.Thebridecarryingabouquetenterslastwithherfatherwhowill"giveheraway[2]".Thegroomentersthechurchfromasidedoor.Whentheweddingpartyisgatheredbythealtar,thebrideandgroomexchangevows.Itistraditionaltousethewords"Tohaveandtoholdfromthisdayforward,forbetter,forworse,forricher,forpoorer,insicknessandinhealth,toloveandtocherish,tilldeathdouspart[3]".Followingthevows,thecoupleexchangerings.Wearingtheweddingringonthefourthfingerofthelefthandisanoldcustom.
Aftertheceremonythereisoftenaparty,calleda"reception"whichgivestheweddingguestsanopportunitytocongratulatethenewlyweds.
Thecarinwhichthecoupleleavesthechurchisdecoratedwithballoons,streamersandshavingcream.Thewords"JustMarried"arepaintedonthetrunkorbackwindow.Thebrideandgroomruntothecarunderashowerofrice[4]thrownbytheweddingguests.Whenthecoupledrivesawayfromthechurch,friendsoftenchasethemincars,honkinganddrawingattentiontothem.Andthenthecouplegoontheirhoneymoon.
美国的国土上居住着各种各样的人,他们的婚礼也千差万别。
有热闹庄重的教堂婚礼;有在山顶上举行的婚礼,客人们光着脚陪伴登高;也有在海底举行的婚礼,客人们戴着氧气罐跟着入水。
但婚礼无论在哪儿举行或怎样举行,总有某些传统的风俗。
在举行婚礼前先要先订婚,然后发放请贴给住在附近的人和好朋友以及远方的亲戚。
当一切准备就绪,就该到最激动人心的时刻了。
婚礼本身通常进行20至40分钟。
婚礼一行人伴着结婚进行曲进入教堂。
新娘手持一束鲜花和她的父亲最后进来,父亲要把她交给新郎。
而新郎则要从侧门进入教堂。
当婚礼一行人聚集到教堂的祭坛前时,新娘和新郎互相表达誓言。
常用的结婚誓言是:
“而今而后,不论境遇好坏,家境贫富,生病与否,誓言相亲相爱,至死不分离。
”宣誓过后,二人交换戒指。
通常把戒指戴在左手无名指上,这是一个古老的风俗。
礼仪过后,通常会有宴会,叫“喜宴”。
宴会给参加婚礼的人一个向新婚夫妇祝贺的机会。
新郎新娘乘坐汽车离开教堂,汽车上装饰有气球,彩色纸带、刮须膏之类的东西。
“新婚燕尔”几个字常写在汽车后的行李箱上或后玻璃窗上。
新娘新郎从婚礼客人撒下的雨点般的生大米中跑向汽车。
小两口儿开车离开教堂时,朋友们常常开车追赶他们,不停地按喇叭,引他们注意。
然后小两口儿就接着去度蜜月了。

1.weddingmarch:
婚礼进行曲。
在教堂举行的婚礼,通常是新娘的母亲和新郎的父母先就座后,奏乐开始,牧师向大家致意。
接着奏婚礼进行曲,婚礼一行人进入教堂,新娘挽着她的父亲要最后进来。
2.giveheraway:
把新娘交给新郎。
giveaway常用的意思是“分发、泄露、出卖”。
但它也有一个专门的意思就是指“在举行婚礼时把新娘交给新郎”。
如:
Marywasgivenawaybyherfather.
3.tilldeathdouspart:
至死不分离。
这是英语婚礼誓言中沿袭下来的一个固定用法(不用does)。
就像人们常说的Godblessyou.一样,而不能说成Godblessesyou.
4.showerofrice:
婚礼时撒向新人的生米。
结婚仪式中很有趣的一项就是大家要向新婚夫妇头上撒生米(uncookedrice)。
“生米”意味着生儿育女、多子多福,有祝福的意思。
美元的起源

TheoriginofthealmightydollarisinwhatisnowtheCzechRepublic.In1519,asilverminenearthetownofJoachimstal(literally"Joachim'svalley,"fromtheGermanTal,meaningvalley)beganmintingasilvercoincalled,unimaginatively,theJoachimstaler.Thecoin,whichwascirculatedwidely,becamebetterknownbyitsclippedform,thetaler.InDutchandLowGerman,theinitialconsonantsoftenedtobecomedaler.Englishadoptedthisform,eventuallychangingitsspellingtothemoderndollar.
IntheAmericancolonies,therewasnostandardcurrency.ThecointhatwasinwidestusewastheSpanishPeso,knownalsoas"PiecesofEight"becauseitcouldbedividedintoeightpie-likepieces.TheEnglishcolonistsinformallyassignedthenamedollartothiscoin.In1785,whentheContinentalCongressestablishedU.S.currency,theyadopteddollarasnameforthestandardunitofcurrency,atthesuggestionofGoverneurMorrisandThomasJefferson,becausethetermwaswidelyknownandwasnotassociatedwithanyformofofficialEnglishcurrency.(Jeffersonalsocoinedthetermdisme,fromtheFrenchdixieme,foratenthofadollar.Pronounceddeem,iteventuallybecamedime.)
Theoriginofthe$signhasseveralfolkloricstoriesattached.OnesaysthatThomasJeffersoninventedit,perhapsasasortofmonogramforTS.JeffersonwasthefirsttousethesymbolinrelationtotheU.S.dollar,butthisstoryisfanciful.AnothersaysthatoriginallyitwasUsuperimposedoveranS,forU.S.ofcourse.EventuallythebaseoftheUerodedduetopoorprintingtechnology,leavinganSwithtwolinesthroughit.AnothersaysthatitisavariantofafigureeightthatappearedontheSpanishPeso,standingforthepiecesofeight.Thislastisclosetothetruth,butnotquitethere.
TheSpanishroyalfamilyusedonitsescutcheon,twopillars(representingthePillarsofHerculesinGibraltarandMorocco)crossedbyanunfurledbannerreading"PlusUltra."ThissymbolappearedonthePeso,andlookedmuchlikethemodern$sign.ItwasadoptedasasymbolforthePesointheAmericancolonies,andwastransferredtothedollar.
TheU.S.wasthefirstnationtoadoptanofficialcurrencynamedthedollar.In1797,theBankofEnglandbeganminting"dollar"coinsasbank-issuedcurrency.OthernationsthathaveadoptedthenamedollarfortheircurrencyhavedonesoinemulationofeithertheU.S.orthisshort-livedBankofEnglandpractice.
至高无上的美元起源于现今的捷克共和国。
1519年,位于Joachimstal镇(意为Joachim山谷,源于德语“Tal”为“山谷”)附近的一座银矿开始制造银币,银币的名称,不假思索的取名为Joachimster,这种银币广泛流通,后来名称简化为“taler”,变的更加有名。
在荷兰及德国南方,taler一词开头的辅音常常软化而变成“daler”。
英语采用了这一形式,最终其拼写为现在的“dollar”一词的形式。
在美国殖民地,以前没有标准的货币。
最广泛使用的是西班牙比索,也称之为“八片币”,因为它可以分成包子状的八块。
英国殖民主义者把这种钱币非正式的称为dollar(元)。
1785年,美洲殖民地大会确定了美国货币,他们根据毛里求斯总督和托马斯.杰弗逊的建议把dollar(美元)作为标准货币单位名称。
因为dollar一词已广为人知,它与任何形式的英国官方货币无关。
(杰弗逊还命名了硬币角(disme),起源于法语dixieme,作为一美元的十分之一,发音为“deem”,最终演变为dime)
美元的符号$的起源与好几种民间传说有关。
一种说法是:
它是由托马斯?
杰弗逊发明的,为TS交织字母的标记。
杰弗逊首次将这符号与美元联系起来,但这种说法未免有点荒诞。
另一种说法是:
原来是字母U加在字母S上,当然代表U.S.(美国)。
后来由于印刷技术差的缘故,U的底部未印出来,结果就剩下两条竖杠在字母S上。
还有一种说法是,它是数字“8”的变体,“8”曾经出现在西班牙比索上,代表“八片币”。
这最后一种说法与事实相近,但也不能令人信服。
西班牙皇室将$这一符号用在饰有纹章的盾牌上,两个柱子(代表大力神在直布罗陀和摩洛哥的两根柱子)与一面招展的旗帜相交,有“超级”的含义。
这一符号出现在比索上,很像今天$这一符号。
在美洲殖民地,它被用来作为比索的符号,后来转用来代表美元。
美国是第一个将官方货币命名为“元”的国家。
1797年,英国银行开始铸造面值为“元”的硬币,作为银行发行的货币。
其他国家相继采用“元”作为他们的货币,他们不是模仿美国就是模仿寿命不长的英国银行的做法。
美国国歌
TheStarSpangledBanner
"TheStarSpangledBanner"于1814年由FrancisScottKey作曲,WoodrowWilson总统于1916年下令于军中场合演奏,于1931年由国会立法通过成为国歌。
国歌共包括四节,绝大多数场合只唱第一节。

美国人种
语言是文化的载体。
美国不同阶段的经济文化变化都反映在语言中。
随着时代变化,新的词语不断应运而生。
继一次大战后的“迷惘的一代”(LostGeneration)和二次大战后的“垮掉的一代”(BeatGeneration),又出现了“BabyBoomers”、“Yuppies”、“Dinks”、“SandwichGeneration”、“CouchPotato”、“MallRats”等等。
在第二次世界大战期间,美国大约有一千三百万人参加服役,其中许多人都没有结婚。
在战后,他们纷纷组建家庭,生儿育女,因此在1946年至1964年这18年间,美国人口急剧增长,新生儿的人数共有七千八百万。
不久美国人就称这一代为“BabyBoomers”。
这些“BabyBoomers”一改其父母对战争的“狂热”,对生活采取务实的态度。
他们要弥补战争给父母所造成的损失,他们勤奋工作,少生孩子。
他们其中的许多人都获得了成功,他们有抱负,受过高等教育,生活在城市,有专业性的工作,收入颇丰,生活很富裕。
美国又为这些成功者命名为“Yuppies”,前三个字母是“youngurbanprofessionals”缩略。
对“Yuppies”中那些不要孩子的人,美国人又将他们称为“Dinks”,它是“DubleIncome,Nokids”的缩写。
其实,“BabyBoomers”并不都是富有的“Yuppies”,有的夫妇不仅有孩子而且有老人要抚养,这样另一个名字又产生了,那便是“SandwichGeneration”,意味着这些人象三明治中的肉一样夹在老人和孩子之间,负担很重。
美国的电视业发展迅速,几乎所有人都能看到有线电视节目,家庭影剧院的出现更是许多人沉迷于电视,这种一有时间就坐在沙发上看电视的人被称为“CouchPotato”。
它不禁使人们想到悠然坐在沙发里一声不吭,一动不动,象土豆似的人。
随着商业的发展繁荣,大的购物中心(shoppingmall)不断涌现。
逛购物中心成了一种乐趣,尤其是年轻人,他们即使不购物也在中心钻来钻去,象老鼠一样,美国人将他们戏称为“MallRats”。
