Theredweltontheoutskirtsofalargeforestapoorwoodcutterwithhiswifeandtwochildren;theboywascalledHanselandthegirlGrettel.Hehadalwayslittleenoughtoliveon,andonce,whentherewasagreatfamineintheland,hecouldn'tevenprovidethemwithdailybread.Onenight,ashewastossingaboutinbed,fullofcaresandworry,hesighedandsaidtohiswife:
"What'stobecomeofus?
howarewetosupportourpoorchildren,nowthatwehavenothingmoreforourselves?
""I'lltellyouwhat,husband,"answeredthewoman;"earlyto-morrowmorningwe'lltakethechildrenoutintothethickestpartofthewood;thereweshalllightafireforthemandgivethemeachapieceofbread;thenwe'llgoontoourworkandleavethemalone.Theywon'tbeabletofindtheirwayhome,andweshallthusberidofthem.""No,wife,"saidherhusband,"thatIwon'tdo;howcouldIfinditinmyhearttoleavemychildrenaloneinthewood?

"Nowit'sallupwithus.""No,no,Grettel,"saidHansel,"don'tfretyourself;I'llbeabletofindawaytoescape,nofear."Andwhentheoldpeoplehadfallenasleephegotup,slippedonhislittlecoat,openedthebackdoorandstoleout.Themoonwasshiningclearly,andthewhitepebbleswhichlayinfrontofthehouseglitteredlikebitsofsilver.Hanselbentdownandfilledhispocketwithasmanyofthemashecouldcramin.ThenhewentbackandsaidtoGrettel:
"Becomforted,mydearlittlesister,andgotosleep:
Godwillnotdesertus";andhelaydowninbedagain.
Atdaybreak,evenbeforethesunwasup,thewomancameandwokethetwochildren:
"Getup,youlie-abeds,we'reallgoingtotheforesttofetchwood."Shegavethemeachabitofbreadandsaid:
"There'ssomethingforyourluncheon,butdon'tyoueatitupbefore,forit'sallyou'llget."Gretteltookthebreadunderherapron,asHanselhadthestonesinhispocket.Thentheyallsetouttogetheronthewaytotheforest.Aftertheyhadwalkedforalittle,Hanselstoodstillandlookedbackatthehouse,andthismanoeuvreherepeatedagainandagain.Hisfatherobservedhim,andsaid:
"Hansel,whatareyougazingatthere,andwhydoyoualwaysremainbehind?
Takecare,anddon'tloseyourfooting.""Oh!
father,"saidHansel,&
quot;Iamlookingbackatmywhitekitten,whichissittingontheroof,wavingmeafarewell."Thewomanexclaimed:
"Whatadonkeyyouare!
thatisn'tyourkitten,that'sthemorningsunshiningonthechimney."ButHanselhadnotlookedbackathiskitten,buthadalwaysdroppedoneofthewhitepebblesoutofhispocketontothepath.
Whentheyhadreachedthemiddleoftheforestthefathersaid:
"Now,children,goandfetchalotofwood,andI'lllightafirethatyoumaynotfeelcold."HanselandGrettelheapedupbrushwoodtilltheyhadmadeapilenearlythesizeofasmallhill.Thebrushwoodwassetfireto,andwhentheflamesleapedhighthewomansaid:
"Nowliedownatthefire,children,andrestyourselves:
wearegoingintotheforesttocutdownwood;whenwe'vefinishedwe'llcomebackandfetchyou."HanselandGrettelsatdownbesidethefire,andatmiddayatetheirlittlebitsofbread.Theyheardthestrokesoftheaxe,sotheythoughttheirfatherwasquitenear.Butitwasnoaxetheyheard,butaboughhehadtiedonadeadtree,andthatwasblownaboutbythewind.Andwhentheyhadsatforalongtimetheireyesclosedwithfatigue,andtheyfellfastasleep.Whentheyawokeatlastitwaspitchdark.Grettelbegantocry,andsaid:
"Howareweevertogetoutofthewood?
"ButHanselcomfortedher."Waitabit,"hesaid,"tillthemoonisup,andthenwe'llfindourwaysureenough."Andwhenthefullmoonhadrisenhetookhissisterbythehandandfollowedthepebbles,whichshonelikenewthreepennybits,andshowedthemthepath.Theywalkedonthroughthenight,andatdaybreakreachedtheirfather'shouseagain.Theyknockedatthedoor,andwhenthewomanopeneditsheexclaimed:
"Younaughtychildren,whatatimeyou'vesleptinthewood!
wethoughtyouwerenevergoingtocomeback."Butthefatherrejoiced,forhisconsciencehadreproachedhimforleavinghischildrenbehindbythemselves.
Notlongafterwardtherewasagaingreatdearthintheland,andthechildrenheardtheirmotheraddresstheirfatherthusinbedonenight:
"Everythingiseatenuponcemore;wehaveonlyhalfaloafinthehouse,andwhenthat'sdoneit'sallupwithus.Thechildrenmustbegotridof;we'llleadthemdeeperintothewoodthistime,sothattheywon'tbeabletofindtheirwayoutagain.Thereisnootherwayofsavingourselves."Theman'sheartsmotehimheavily,andhethought:
"Surelyitwouldbebettertosharethelastbitewithone'schildren!
"Buthiswifewouldn'tlistentohisarguments,anddidnothingbutscoldandreproachhim.Ifamanyieldsoncehe'sdonefor,andso,becausehehadgiveninthefirsttime,hewasforcedtodosothesecond.
Butthechildrenwereawake,andhadheardtheconversation.WhentheoldpeoplewereasleepHanselgotup,andwantedtogooutand
pickuppebblesagain,ashehaddonethefirsttime;butthewomanhadbarredthedoor,andHanselcouldn'tgetout.Butheconsoledhislittlesister,andsaid:
"Don'tcry,Grettel,andsleeppeacefully,forGodissuretohelpus."
Atearlydawnthewomancameandmadethechildrengetup.Theyreceivedtheirbitofbread,butitwasevensmallerthanthetimebefore.OnthewaytothewoodHanselcrumbleditinhispocket,andeveryfewminuteshestoodstillanddroppedacrumbontheground."Hansel,whatareyoustoppingandlookingaboutyoufor?
"saidthefather."I'mlookingbackatmylittlepigeon,whichissittingontheroofwavingmeafarewell,"answeredHansel."Fool!

"Justsitdownthere,children,andifyou'retiredyoucansleepabit;we'regoingintotheforesttocutdownwood,andintheeveningwhenwe'refinishedwe'llcomebacktofetchyou."AtmiddayGretteldividedherbreadwithHansel,forhehadstrewnhisallalongtheirpath.Thentheyfellasleep,andeveningpassedaway,butnobodycametothepoorchildren.Theydidn'tawaketillitwaspitchdark,andHanselcomfortedhissister,saying:
"Onlywait,Grettel,tillthemoonrises,thenweshallseethebread-crumbsIscatteredalongthepath;theywillshowusthewaybacktothehouse."Whenthemoonappearedtheygotup,buttheyfoundnocrumbs,forthethousandsofbirdsthatflyaboutthewoodsandfieldshadpickedthemallup."Nevermind,"saidHanseltoGrettel;"you'llseewe'llfindawayout";butallthesametheydidnot.Theywanderedaboutthewholenight,andthenextday,frommorningtillevening,buttheycouldnotfindapathoutofthewood.Theywereveryhungry,too,fortheyhadnothingtoeatbutafewberriestheyfoundgrowingontheground.Andatlasttheyweresotiredthattheirlegsrefusedtocarrythemanylonger,sotheylaydownunderatreeandfellfastasleep.
Onthethirdmorningaftertheyhadlefttheirfather'shousetheysetabouttheirwanderingagain,butonlygotdeeperanddeeperintothewood,andnowtheyfeltthatifhelpdidnotcometothemsoontheymustperish.Atmiddaytheysawabeautifullittlesnow-whitebirdsittingonabranch,whichsangsosweetlythattheystoppedstillandlistenedtoit.Andwhenitssongwasfinisheditflappeditswingsandflewoninfrontofthem.Theyfolloweditandcametoalittlehouse,ontheroofofwhichitperched;andwhentheycamequiteneartheysawthatthecottagewasmadeofbreadandroofedwithcakes,whilethewindowwasmadeoftransparent
sugar."Nowwe'llsetto,"saidHansel,"andhavearegularblow-out.I'lleatabitoftheroof,andyou,Grettel,caneatsomeofthewindow,whichyou'llfindasweetmorsel."Hanselstretcheduphishandandbrokeoffalittlebitoftherooftoseewhatitwaslike,andGrettelwenttothecasementandbegantonibbleatit.Thereuponashrillvoicecalledoutfromtheroominside:
"Nibble,nibble,littlemouse,Who'snibblingmyhouse?
"
Thechildrenanswered:
"TisHeaven'sownchild,Thetempestwild,"
andwentoneating,withoutputtingthemselvesabout.Hansel,whothoroughlyappreciatedtheroof,toredownabigbitofit,whileGrettelpushedoutawholeroundwindow-pane,andsatdownthebettertoenjoyit.Suddenlythedooropened,andanancientdameleaningonastaffhobbledout.HanselandGrettelweresoterrifiedthattheyletwhattheyhadintheirhHanselandGrettel
andsfall.Buttheoldwomanshookherheadandsaid:
"Oh,ho!
youdearchildren,wholedyouhere?
Justcomeinandstaywithme,noillshallbefallyou."Shetookthembothbythehandandletthemintothehouse,andlaidamostsumptuousdinnerbeforethem--milkandsugaredpancakes,withapplesandnuts.Aftertheyhadfinished,twobeautifullittlewhitebedswerepreparedforthem,andwhenHanselandGrettellaydowninthemtheyfeltasiftheyhadgotinto
