PlotSummary
OnApril15th,1912,theTitanic,thelargestandmostluxuriouspassengershipbuiltuntilthattime,struckanicebergintheNorthAtlanticOceanwhileonitsmaidenvoyagefromSouthhampton,EnglandtoNewYorkCity.1,517oftheship’s2,207passengersdiedwhenthegreatship---whichwasgenerallythoughttobeunsinkable---wentdowntothebottomoftheoceanfloorjusttwohoursafterstrikingtheiceberg.Amongthedeadweresomeoftherichestpeoplealive,butinfactthemajorityofthosewhodiedwererelativelypoorpeoplewhoweretrappedinthebottomoftheship,inwhatwascalledthe‘steerage’quarters.
ThisfilmtellsthestoryofthattragiceventfromthepointofviewofRose,
a100yearoldwomanwhosurvivedthesinking,andisnowlookingbackatwhathappened,85yearslater.Thishappensbecauseoneday,RoserecognizesapaintingofherselfthatwasbeingshownonTV,afterithadbeenrecoveredbyagroupofunderseaexplorerswhowerefilmingtheremainsoftheTitanicontheoceanbottom.Aftersheseesherportrait,sheandhergranddaughtercontactBrock,theleaderoftheexplorationship,sothatshecantellhimthestoryofheramazingadventure.
Atthetimeofthesinking,Rosewasacharmingbutspoiled17yearoldwomanwhowassailingbacktoAmericainordertogetmarriedtoCalHockley,arich,arrogantandtrulydisagreeablebusinessmanwhowasgoingtoeventuallyinheritmillionsofdollars.Rosewasdesperatetoavoidthisfate,butshewasbeingpushedtodosobyhermother,asnobbywomanwhohadrecentlydiscoveredthatherrecentlydeceasedhusbandhadleftherandRosewithoutanymoney,despitetheirrichfamilyname.
Inamomentofgreatdepression,RoseconsidersjumpingofftheTitanic,butisconvincednottodosobyJackDawson,acharmingyoungartistwhotravelsaroundtheworld,paintingthepeoplethathesees.JackhasnomoneyandisclearlynotfromthesamesocialclassasRoseorCal,butoverthenextcoupledays,theyquicklyfallinlove,whichobviouslydoesnotpleaseeitherCalorRose’smother.YetforRoseherself,meetingJackisprobablythebestthingthatwouldeverhappentoher,forduringthecourseoftheirtwoshortdaystogether,Jacksavesher“ineverywaythatapersoncanbesaved.”

WhiletheplotisfocusedonthelovestorybetweenJackandRose,thisfilmoftenexplorestheroleofsocialclassinthelivesoftheindividualcharacters.Indeed,inreallife,thepassengersontheTitanicwereclearlydividedalongclasslines,andthuswhentheshipsunk,fewofthesurvivorswerefrom3rdclasssteerage,whichwaswherethepoorerpassengersstayed,onthelowestlevelsoftheship.
