9.EXTERNALCOATING
ThischapterspecifiestheminimumtechnicalrequirementsforthepreparationofthesurfacecoatingperpipesectionofpipelineforacoatingservicewithathreelayerHDPEextrudedcoating.Thiscoatingisapplicablefor16”and20”diameterpiperequirements.
Finishcoatingshallhavethepropertyofretaincolorflexibilityorintegritywhenexposedtosunlightandclimateconditionsforatleastfor2years.Coatingsshallbeflexibleenoughtobecompatiblewiththenormalpipedeflectionfoundduringconstructionandassemblyofpipelinesandtobeusedwithcoldformingbendinthefieldwithinaradiusofatleast15diametersofthepipinginvolved.
Threelayerofhighdensitypolymershallconsistof:
∙Onelayeroffusion-bondedepoxymaterialonthesteel.
∙Onelayerofextrudedadhesivecoating.
∙OnelayerofHighDensityPolymer(HDPE)extrudedcoating.
ThemarkrequiredtoconformtothespecificationAPI5Lorothermainmarksonthepipeshallnotbedestroyedordarkenedafterthecoatingprocedureisperformed.
Thevendorshallberesponsibleforthesubcontractorswithregardtothesespecificationrequirementsaswellastherequirementsforcodesandstandardsmentionedherein.
Materials
9.1.1General
Everybatchordeliveryofmaterialreceivedshallbetestedtoverifythatthepropertiesthereofareinaccordancewiththemanufacturerliteratureandwiththerequirementsofthisspecification.
Vendorshallhavetheappropriateequipment,properlycalibratedathispremisesfortestingandassessingthecoatingmaterials.
Beforeusingthem,materialsshallbestoredinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.Materialsshallbestoredandusedincleanconditionsandindryareas.
Allmaterialsofeachtypeofcoatingshallcomefromthesamemanufacturer,(eg.,allepoxypowdershallcomefromthesamemanufacturer).Themanufacturerortypeofmaterialmaybechangedonlyifaqualityproblemisfoundduringthecoatingprocedureresultinginachangeandonlyafterthebuyer’sapproval.
Allmaterialsshallbeusedbeforetheexpirydatemarkedonthematerialorthatindicatedbythematerialmanufacturer.
Eachcontainerortankofmaterialtobeusedduringcoatingworksshallbeclearlyindicatedbythemanufacturerwithatleastthefollowinginformation.

Thepurchaserreservestherighttorejectanycoatingmaterialwhichhasnotbeenapprovedbythevendororbyhissubcontractorwithregardtocompliancewiththestandardsofthemanufacturerorwiththerequirementsofthisspecificationwhichestablishesthatthecoatingmaterialshallnothaveanyofthefollowingproblems:

9.2Pipepreparation
9.2.1General
Allcoatingmaterialshallbeappliedinaccordancewiththeinstructionsofthematerialmanufacturer.
Itistheresponsibilityofthevendororsubcontractortostopthecoatingprocedureunderconditionsthatmayadverselyaffectthecoatingquality.
Thebuyerreservestherighttorejectanycoatingproductwhichhasnotbeentestedbythevendororhissubcontractorwithregardtothecompliancewiththisspecification.
Duringallstagesofcoatingapplication,pipebeveledendsshallbeprotectedagainstdamage.
Thepipeendsshallbeleftuncoveredaccordingtothefollowingdetail:
Thepipeendtobetaperedwithamini.100maxi.200mmuncoatedlengthfrompipeend.
Thisareashallbeappropriatelyprotectedduringthecoatingprocedure.
9.2.2SurfacePreparation
Surfacestobecleanedshallbefreefromanyforeignmaterials.AllgreaseandoilshallberemovedbymeansofacleaningsolventasperstandardSSPS-SP1.Onlysaferesidue-freesolventsmaybeused.Gasolineandkeroseneareunacceptable.
Anytypeofsaltordustshallberemovedwithahighpressurewaterjet.Thewatertobeusedshallbecleanandappropriatelyfilteredinordertoavoidpipesurfacecontamination.
Incaseofseverecorrosionoanyothersurfacecontamination,thesurfaceshallbewashedwithanaqueousacidsolution.Thevendorandhissubcontractorshallprovidethespace,equipmentandmaterialstoperformthiswashingprocedure.
Beforecleaningorblasting,pipesshallbeatleast30°C(3°C)abovethedewpoint.Ifrequired,preheatshallbeused.Pipesshallbeevenlyandgraduallyheated.Pre-heattemperatureshallnotexceed150°C.Pipesmayalsobepre-heatedtoremovegrease,oil,orsolvents(RefertoCSAZ245.21-6.2.2.3)
Pipessurfacestobecoatedshallbeabrasiveblasteduntilreachingwhitemetal,asperSSPS-SP10(SSPC-SP10)requirements.
Abrasivelevelshallbemaintainedbyfrequentlyaddingsmallamountsofabrasivematerial.Largeorirregularadditionsshallnotbeused.
Abrasivesshallbeappropriatelyfilteredtoensuretheyarefreefrompollutants.Foracontinuousandeffectiveoperation,theabrasivework-mixforblastingmachinesshallbemaintainedfreefrompollutants.Abrasivewheelequipmentshallprovideanappropriatemixtureofshotandgrit.
Afterblasting,pipesshallbecarefullyinspectedforchipsandothersurfacedefects.Thesedefectsshallbeadequatelyremoved,grindedand/orpolished.Theblastingprofileshallbecheckedfortheserepairedareas.Iftheprofileisnotbetween1.5and2.5milsoverasinglearealargerthen25inch2,thepipeshallbeblastedagainattheexpenseofthevendor.Pipeshallbeblastedagainattheexpenseofthevendorifanyjointprofileisdestroyedoveranareagraterthan0.5%ofthejointoutersurface.
Slightshadows,streaks,ordiscolorationshallbeaccepted.However,atleast95%ofeachsquarefootofsurfaceshallhavetheuniformgreyappearanceofthesurfaceofwhiteblastedmetal.
Theprofileshallbeverifiedbyusinganappropriatequantitativetestingmethod.
Surfacepreparationsorrepairsshallnotreducethepipethicknessbelowtheminimumrequiredtocomplywiththespecifications.Thewallthicknessofeachpipeshallbeverifiedbyusingaproperlycalibratedultrasonicgauge.
Aftersurfacepreparationandbeforeheatingpipesfortheepoxymaterialtobeapplied,pressurizedairorvacuumshallbeusedtoremoveeverylooseabrasive,metalorotherpollutingpart
