Theleafisliketheshapeofapokercardbutthinner.Placedinwaterinabrightsunlight,itcouldproduceenoughelectricitytosupplyahouseinadevelopingcountrywithelectricityforadaybysplittingwaterintohydrogenandoxygen,whicharestoredinafuelcelltoproduceelectricity.
The“artificialleaf”isnotanewconcept.ThefirstartificialleafwasdevelopedmorethanadecadeagobyJohnTurner.However,itwasimpracticalforwideruse,asitwascomposedofrare,expensivemetalsandwashighlyunstablewithalifespanofbarelyoneday.
