TheGovernmenthasalmostdoubleditsspendingoncomputereducationinschools.Mr.WilliamShelton,juniorEducationMinister,announcedthattheMicroelectronicsEducationProgram(MEP)istorunfortwomoreyearswithadditionalfundingofatleast£20million.
Theprogrambeganin1980,wasoriginallyduetoendnextyear,andhadabudgetof£9million.Thishasbeenraisedinbitsandpiecesoverthepastyearto£11million.ThegovernmentwillnowrununtilMarch1986,ataprovisionalcostofaround£20million.
MEPprovidescoursesforteachersanddevelopscomputerprogramsforclassroomuseofpersonalcomputers.ItisruninpartnershipwithaDepartmentofIndustryprogramunderwhichBritish-madepersonalcomputersaresuppliedtoschoolsathalfprice.
Inthatway,virtuallyeverysecondaryschoolhasbeenprovidedwithatleastonecomputeratacentralcosttothetaxpayerofunder£5million.Theprimaryschoolsarenowbeingsuppliedina£9millionprogramwhichgotunderwayattheturnoftheyear.
But,asMr.Sheltonadmittedyesterday.“It'snogoodhavingthecomputerswithouttherightcomputerprogramstoputintothemandagreatdealmoreisstillneeded.”Hence,MEP'snewfunds.
Mr.SheltonsaidyesterdaythatMEP'sachievementincurriculumdevelopmentandteachertraininghadshownthatthecomputercouldbeusedinallcourses.
About15,000secondaryteachershavetakenshortcoursesin"computerawareness"--thatisanecessarypartofthehalf-pricecomputeroffer--andtrainingmaterialsarenowprovidedfor50,000primaryteachers.
