Tofindouttheeffectsofbeingaloneversus(比对)justfeelinglonely,SteptoeofUniversityCollegeLondonandhiscolleaguesexamineddatafrom6,500Britonsaged50andupwhohadfilledoutquestionnairesevaluatingtheirlevelsofloneliness.
Themostsociallyisolatedsubjectshada26%greaterriskofdying,evenwhensex,age,andotherfactorslinkedtosurvivalweretakenintoaccount,theresearchersreportonlinetoday.Theythenmadechangesabouttheirmodeltodeterminewhethertheconnectiontodeathwasduetothefactthatisolatedpeopleareoftenlonely.Itwasn't.
Theresearchersthenexploredtheconnectionbetweenlonelinessitselfanddeath.Intenselonelinessalsoappearedtoraisetheriskofdeathby26%—untiltheteamtookintoaccountahostofotherfactorslinkedtosurvival,includingwealth,education,andthepresenceofhealthproblems.Oncetheirimpacthadbeenexplained,thescientistsdiscoveredthatlonelinessonitsowndidn'tmakepeoplemorevulnerable(脆弱的)todeath.
Theresearcherssuspectthatolderpeoplewhohavefewsocialtiesmaynotbegettingthecaretheyneed.Nooneisurgingthemtoeatrightortaketheirmedicine,andinacrisisnooneistheretohelp.

Otherstudies,includingananalysisofolderAmericansledbyJohnCacioppo,apsychologyprofessorattheUniversityofChicagoinIllinois,haveshownalinkbetweenlonelinessandahigherdeathrate.CaciopposuspectsthatthedisagreementbetweenhisstudyandthenewresearchcouldliewithculturaldifferencesbetweenSteptoe'sBritishsubjectsandAmericans,andthatBritonsandAmericansmaydefinefriendsdifferently,too.

Motivationalfocusaffectshowweapproachlife'schallengesanddemands.Promotion-focusedpeopleseetheirgoalsascreatingapathtogainoradvancementandconcentrateontherewardsthatwillaccumulatewhentheyachievethem.Theyareeagerandtheyplaytowin.You'llrecognizepromotion-focusedpeopleasthosewhoarecomfortabletakingchances,wholiketoworkquickly,whodreambigandthinkcreatively.Unfortunately,allthatchancetaking,speedyworking,andpositivethinkingmakestheseindividualsmorelikelytomakemistakes,lesslikelytothinkthingsthroughandusuallyunpreparedwithaplanBifthingsgowrong.That'sapricetheyarewillingtopay,becauseforthepromotion-focused,theworstthingisachancenottaken,arewardunearned,afailuretoadvance.
Thepromotion-focusedarelikelytofind“artisticandinvestigative”careers,asmusicians,copywriters,inventors,andconsultants.Thesetendtobethink-outside-the-boxjobs,inwhichpeoplearerewardedforcreativethinking,andbeingpracticalisn'temphasized.
Prevention-focusedpeople,incontrast,seetheirgoalsasresponsibilities.Theyworryaboutwhatmightgowrongiftheydon'tworkhardenoughoraren'tcarefulenough.Theyarecautiousandplaytonotlose,tohangontowhattheyhave,tomaintainthestatusquo(现状).Theyoftentrytostaysafe,sotheirworkismorethorough,accurate,andcarefullyconsidered.Tosucceed,theyworkslowlyandcarefully.Theyaren'tusuallythemostcreativethinkers,buttheymayhaveexcellentanalytical(分析的)andproblem-solvingskills.Whilethepromotion-mindedbringlotsofideas,goodandbad,itoftentakessomeoneprevention-mindedtotellthedifferencebetweenthetwo.
Studiesshowthatprevention-focusedindividualsarelikelytotakeupwhatorganizationalpsychologistscall“conventionalandrealistic”work,asadministrators,bookkeepers,accountants,technicians,andmanufacturingworkers.Theseoccupationsrequireknowledgeofrulesandregulations,carefulperformance,andapropensity(癖好)forthoroughness—theyarejobsinwhichattentiontodetailiswhatreallypaysoff.
