M&Sestimatesthataboutthree-quartersofBritishconsumersareinterestedinthegreenthemeinsomeway.Buteventhekeenestethicalconsumerfacescomplicatedsituations,andsometimestheapparentlyobviousethicalchoiceturnsouttobethewrongone.SurelyitmustbegreenerforBritonstobuyrosesfromtheNetherlandsthanonesair-freightedfromKenya?
Infact,astudyshowedthatrelatedgreenhousegastotheDutchrosestobesixtimesaslargebecausetheyhadtobegrowninheatedgreenhouses.
JoelMakower,editorofGreenB,saysthat,givenachoice,mostconsumerswillchoosethegreenerproduct—provideditdoesnotcostanymore,comesfromatrustedmaker,requiresnospecialefforttobuyoruseandisatleastasgoodasthealternative.“That'salmostanimpossiblebarrierforanyproduct,”henotes.
