GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheWinbond®ISD1700ChipCorder®Seriesisahighquality,fullyintegrated,single-chipmulti-messagevoicerecordandplaybackdeviceideallysuitedtoavarietyofelectronicsystems.Themessagedurationisuserselectableinrangesfrom26secondsto120seconds,dependingonthespecificdevice.Thesamplingfrequencyofeachdevicecanalsobeadjustedfrom4kHzto12kHzwithanexternalresistor,givingtheusergreaterflexibilityindurationversusrecordingqualityforeachapplication.Operatingvoltagespansarangefrom2.4Vto5.5VtoensurethattheISD1700devicesareoptimizedforawiderangeofbatteryorline-poweredapplications.
TheISD1700isdesignedforoperationineitherstandaloneormicrocontroller(SPI)mode.Thedeviceincorporatesaproprietarymessagemanagementsystemthatallowsthechiptoself-manageaddresslocationsformultiplemessages.Thisuniquefeatureprovidessophisticatedmessagingflexibilityinasimplepush-buttonenvironment.Thedevicesincludeanon-chiposcillator(withexternalresistorcontrol),microphonepreamplifierwithAutomaticGainControl(AGC),anauxiliaryanaloginput,anti-aliasingfilter,Multi-LevelStorage(MLS)array,smoothingfilter,volumecontrol,PulseWidthModulation(PWM)ClassDspeakerdriver,andcurrent/voltageoutput.
TheISD1700devicesalsosupportanoptional“vAlert”(voiceAlert)featurethatcanbeusedasanewmessageindicator.WithvAlert,thedeviceflashesanexternalLEDtoindicatethatanewmessageispresent.Besides,fourspecialsoundeffectsarereservedforaudioconfirmationofoperations,suchas“StartRecord”,“StopRecord”,“Erase”,“Forward”,“GlobalErase”,andetc.
Recordingsarestoredintoon-chipFlashmemory,providingzero-powermessagestorage.Thisuniquesingle-chipsolutionismadepossiblethroughWinbond’spatentedMulti-LevelStorage(MLS)technology.Audiodataarestoreddirectlyinsolid-statememorywithoutdigitalcompression,providingsuperiorqualityvoiceandmusicreproduction.
Voicesignalscanbefedintothechipthroughtwoindependentpaths:
adifferentialmicrophoneinputandasingle-endedanaloginput.Foroutputs,theISD1700providesaPulseWidthModulation(PWM)ClassDspeakerdriverandaseparateanalogoutputsimultaneously.ThePWMcandirectlydriveastandard8Ωspeakerortypicalbuzzer,whiletheseparateanalogoutputcanbeconfiguredasasingle-endedcurrentorvoltageoutputtodriveanexternalamplifier.
WhileinStandalonemode,theISD1700devicesautomaticallyenterintopowerdownmodeforpowerconservationafteranoperationiscompleted.
IntheSPImode,theuserhasfullcontrolviatheserialinterfaceinoperatingthedevice.Thisincludesrandomaccesstoanylocationinsidethememoryarraybyspecifyingthestartaddressandendaddressofoperations.SPImodealsoallowsaccesstotheAnalogPathConfiguration(APC)register.Thisregisterallowsflexibleconfigurationofaudiopaths,inputs,outputsandmixing.TheAPCdefaultconfigurationforstandalonemodecanalsobemodifiedbystoringtheAPCdataintoanon-volatileregister(NVCFG)thatisloadedatinitialization.UtilizingthecapabilitiesofISD1700Series,designershavethecontrolandflexibilitytoimplementvoicefunctionalityintothehigh-endproducts.

Winbond’spatentedChipCorder®Multi-LevelStorage(MLS)technologyprovidesanatural,high-qualityrecordandplaybacksolutiononasinglechip.TheinputvoicesignalsarestoreddirectlyintheFlashmemoryandarereproducedintheirnaturalformwithoutanyofthecompressionartifactscausedbydigitalspeechsolutions.
(2)MessageDuration
TheISD1700Seriesofferrecordandplaybackdurationfrom20secondsto480seconds.Samplingfrequencyandmessageduration,TDur,aredeterminedbyanexternalresistorconnectedtotheROSCpin.
(3)FlashStorage
TheISD1700devicesutilizeembeddedFlashmemorytoprovidenon-volatilestorage.Amessagecanberetainedforaminimumof100yearswithoutpower.Additionally,each
devicecanbere-recordedover100,000times(typical).
2、MEMORYARRAYARCHITECTURE
ThememoryarrayprovidesstorageoffourspecialSoundEffects(SEs)aswellasthevoicedata.Thememoryarrayisaddressedbyrows.Arowistheminimumstorageresolutionbywhichthememorycanbeaddressed.Thememoryassignmentisautomaticallyhandledbytheinternalmessagemanagementsysteminstandalonemode.WhileinSPImode,onehasthefullaccesstotheentirememoryviatheelevenaddressbits.
Thefoursoundeffects(SE)occupythefirstsixteenrowsinthememoryarraywithfourrowsforeachSE.Thatmeansfromaddress0x000toaddress0x00F.Theremainingmemoryisdedicatedtovoicedatastorage.Hence,theaddressofvoicemessagestoragewillstartfrom0x010totheendofmemoryarray.
3、MODESOFOPERATIONS
TheISD1700SeriescanoperateineitherStandalone(Push-Button)ormicrocontroller(SPI)mode.
(1)Standalone(Push-Button)Mode
StandaloneoperationentailsuseoftheREC,PLAY,FT,FWD,ERASE,VOLandRESETpinstotriggeroperations.Theinternalstatemachineautomaticallyconfigurestheaudiopathaccordingtothedesiredoperation.Inthismode,theinternalstatemachinetakesfullcontrolonmessagemanagement.Thisallowstheusertorecord,playback,erase,andforwardmessageswithouttheneedstoknowtheexactaddressesofthemessagesstoredinsidethememory.
(2)SPIMode
InSPImode,controlofthedeviceisachievedthroughthe4-wireserialinterface.Commandssimilartothepushbuttoncontrols,suchasREC,PLAY,FT,FWD,ERASE,VOLandRESET,canbeexecutedthroughtheSPIinterface.Inaddition,therearecommandsthatallowthemodificationoftheanalogpathconfiguration,aswellascommandsthatdirectaccessthememoryaddressofthearray,plusothers.TheSPImodeallowsfullcontrolofthedeviceandtheabilitytoperformcomplexmessagemanagementratherthanconformtothecircularmemoryarchitectureaspush-buttonmode.
Inaddition,itissuggestedthatboththemicrocontrollerandtheISD1700devicehavethesamepowersupplylevelfordesignsimplicity.
Ineithermode,itisstronglyrecommendedthatanyunusedpins,nomatterinputoroutput,mustbeleftfloatedorunconnected.Otherwise,itwillcausethedevicebecomingmalfunction.
ANALOGPATHCONFIGURATION(APC)
TheanalogpathoftheISD1700canbeconfiguredtoaccommodateawidevarietyofsignalpathpossibilities.Thisincludesthesourceofrecordingsignals,mixingofinputsignals,mixingtheplaybacksignalwithaninputsignaltotheoutputs,feed-throughsignaltotheoutputsandwhichoutputsbeingactivated.
Theactiveanalogpathconfigurationisdeterminedbyacombinationoftheinternalstateofthedevice,i.e.desiredoperation(recordorplayback),thestatusoftheFTandthecontentsoftheAPCregister.TheAPCregisterisinitializedbytheinternalnon-volatileconfiguration(NVCFG)bitsuponpower-on-resetorresetfunction.TheAPCregistercanbereadandloadedusingSPIcommands.
ThefactorydefaultofNVCFGbits, D0>,is010001000000=0x440.ThisconfiguresthedevicewithrecordingthroughtheMICinputs,FTviaAnaIninput,playbackfromMLS,SEeditingfeatureenabled,maximumvolumelevel,activePWMdriverandAUDcurrentoutputs.OnecanuseSPIcommandstomodifytheAPCregisterandstoreitpermanentlyintotheNVCFGbits. Thedevicecanbeinpower-down,power-up,recording,playbackand/orfeed-throughstatedependingupontheoperationrequestedbythepush-buttonsorrelatedSPIcommands.TheactivepathineachofthesestatesisdeterminedbyD3andD4oftheAPCregister,aswellaseitherD6oftheAPCregisterinSPImodeortheFTstatusinstandalonemode.Inaddition,D7~D9oftheAPCregisterdeterminewhichoutputdriversareactivated.
