AThemagazineasaproductforleisurereading,enjoymentandinformation,or,astheGentlemenofthedaywouldhaveputit‘edification’,haditsoriginsinEnglandduringtheearlyyearsoftheeighteenthcenturywheretheinnovatorwasDanielDefoe,thewriterofRobinsonCrusoe.ThewordmagazinecomesformtheFrenchmagasinwhichoriginallymeantastorehouse,anapttermsincethefirstprintedmagazineswereholdingsforamiscellanyofwritingsonvarioussubjects.DefoetitledhismagazineTheReview,which,fiveyearsafterthefirstissue,wasfollowedbytwoothernowfamousmagazinesTheTattlerandTheSpectatorbothpublicationsfoundedbythesamepartner-writersRichardSteeleandJosephAddison.
BAsforAustralianpopularmagazines,initially,duringthefoundingdaysofthecolonies,readersatthetimedependedontheslowsailingshipsfrom‘home’tobringthem,amongtheothernecessaryitems,newspapersandjournals.
CItwasnotuntil1855thatAustraliaproduceditsown,andfirstpopularmagazine.ThiswasthehighlysuccessfulMelbournePunch,whichhadalifespanreachingintothefirstquarterofthetwentiethcentury.
DPopularillustratedmagazinesrapidlybecameanimportantandsignificantfactortotheliterateinAustralia,whowereformingournationalimage,aswerethesingersofballadsandstrollingentertainerswhowerealsomakingamajorcontribution.OutofthisbackgroundthenowfamousoldBulletinemergedin1880.FromthestartTheBulletinpolicywastofosterandencourageAustralianwritersandartists:
itsucceededinmakingthenamesandreputationsofHenryLawson,‘Banjo’Paterson,SteeleRuddandscoresofothers.Itcreatedanew,uniqueschoolofblack-and-whiteartwhich,forinstance,gavePhilMayhisbigchanceandeventualworldrecognition.TheinfluenceofTheBulletinwassuchthatthiseraofthelegendary‘nineties’isregardedasthesourceofournationalculture.
FromthisAustralianpre-Federationeraanumberoffascinatingmagazineswerenotonlyfounded,butmanywereoriginatedandownedbydistinguishedwritersoftheday.TheseincludedthewritersHenryKendall,MarcusClarke,RolfBoldrewood,RandolphBedford,EdwardDyson,NormanLindsayandC.J.Dennisamongothers.
EAstheyweredevelopedtechnicaladvanceswerepromptlyexploited,themostsensationalbeingthedevelopmentofphoto-processengravingwhichallowed,forthefirsttime,thereproductionof‘half-tone’photographs.Thisingeniousmethodsimplyrequiredaphotographtobere-photographedthroughadottedalasscreenontoametalsheetwhere,afteranacidbath,thetonesaresimulatedbyapatternofminute,raiseddotsvaryinginsize.Wheninkedthemetalsheetisreadyforreproducingafacsimilephotographmadeoftinydots.Previously,asceneoraneventwasdrawninreverse,ofbacktofront,byanartistontoapreparedblockofwood.Thiswasthengiventoanengraverwho,withavarietyofdelicatewhich,wheninkedandpressureappliedwouldgiveablackandwhiteimpressionoftheimage.Andforthefirsttimetoophoto-engravingenabledanartisttodrawacartoon,forinstance,inanymannerofstylehechoseandtheprintedresult,whichcouldnowbeenlargedorreducedinsize,wouldbeaccurateinverydetailjustasitwasdrawn.
Othernotsosignificanttechnicaldevelopmentshavebeenhigh-speedprintingpresses,simultaneousmulti-colorprinting,andcertainelectronic‘scanner’equipmentforpreparingcolorillustrations.
FByandlargecontemporaryAustralianmagazinestodaydonotdiffergreatlyincontentformthoseofthelastcentury.Therearesomenewdirections:
thehighpoliticalcontentofTheBulletinforinstance,reflectsanawarenessthatAustraliaisincreasinglybeingdrawnintothewiderinternationalcommunity-thefeaturesandarticlesabout‘BigBusiness’,homeandoverseasreflectthisappreciation.
