摘 要:
本论文主要分析《简爱》中主要人物的性格特征。
不管简爱见了什么,不管她在哪里,她总反抗那个不公平的社会,她从不放弃试图得到自由、独立、公平的生活和真实的爱。
由于不懈的努力她最后得到了尊严,自由和真爱。
从小说中简的话语中我们可以分析出她的性格特征:
自重、自尊、自强、自立、善良、朴实、纯洁、高尚。
这就是为什么一个纯洁的爱情故事能被广大读者喜爱的原因。

ThisarticlemainlyanalyzethecharacterofkeyfiguresinJaneEyre.NomatterwhatJanemet,nomatterwhereshewas,shealwaysrebelledagainstthatunfairsociety,shenevergaveuptotryherbesttogetfree,independent,fairlifeandtruelove.Byunremittingeffortsshefinallygotdignity,freedomandtruelove.Jane’sspecialcharacterranthoughthewholenovel.FromtheutteranceofJaneinthisnovel,wecananalysishercharacter:
selfrespect;selfesteemandsimple.Thisisthereasonwhythatapurelovestorylovedbymassesofreader.

CharlotteBrontewrotethisbook.CharlotteBrontewasbornonApril21,1816,atThomton,Yorkskire.ShewasthethirdchildofPatrickBronte,CurateofHawoth.WhenCharlottewasveryyoung,hermotherdied,leavingbehindsixchildren.CharlotteandthreeofhersistersweresentawaytoCowanBridgeschool.Whereconditionswereveryharsh.ThetwooldestsistersdiedthereandCharlotteandEmilyreturnedhome.Theywrotewhathasbecomeknowasthe“Brontejuvenilia“Storiesofimaginarywordsinminiaturebooks.CharlotteBronteisoneofthoseauthorwhoselifehasattractedasmuchattentionasherwriting.Charlotteandherfamilyhavebeenthesubjectofmanybooks,astageplay,andafilmbytheFrenchdirectorTruffautforsamepeople,interestinBrontefamilyisalmostonthelevelofacult,andthereareevenorganizedtourstotheplaceassociatedwiththefamily’shistory.
CharlotteattendedClergyDaughter'sSchoolinLancashirein1824.Shereturnedhomenextyearbecauseoftheharshconditions.In1831shewenttoschoolatRoeHead,whereshelaterworkedasateacher.However,shefellill,sufferedfrommelancholia,andgaveupthispost.Charlotte'sattemptstoearnherlivingasagovernesswerehinderedbyherdisablingshyness,herignoranceofnormalchildren,andheryearningtobewithhersisters.
Undeterredbyherownrejection,CharlottebeganJaneEyre,whichappearedin1847,andbecameanimmediatesuccess.CharlottededicatedthebooktoWilliamMakepeaceThackeray,whodescribeditas'themasterworkofagreatgenius'.Theheroineisapennilessorphanwhobecomesateacher,obtainsapostasagoverness,inheritsmoneyfromanuncle,andmarriesafterseveralturnsoftheplottheByronichero.ItwasfollowedbyShirley(1848)andVillette(1853),basedonhermemoriesofBrussels.Althoughheridentitywaswellknown,CharlottecontinuedtopublishasCurrerBell.Hertragedy,Belisarius,islost.
InJaneEyretheauthorusedherexperiencesattheEvangelicalschoolandasgoverness.Thenovelseverelycriticizedthelimitedoptionsopentoeducatedbutimpoverishedwomen,andtheideathatwomen"oughttoconfinethemselvestomakingpuddingsandknittingstockings,toplayingonthepianoandembroideringbags."Jane'spassionatedesireforawiderlife,herneedtobeloved,andherrebelliousquestioningofconventions,alsoreflectedCharlotte'sowndreams.JaneisanUglyDuckling,whofulfillsalltheteenageromanticdreamsofpassionthatbreaksallobstacles.Thegloomyhero,Mr.Rochester,representsawomanman:
theidealofmasculinetendernessiscombinedwithamassivelymasculinestrengthofcharacteralongByroniclines.Jane'sdiscoveryatthealtarthatRochesterhasaninsanewifehiddenintheatticisthemostshockingplottwistofthenovel.BrontehintsthatMrs.Rochesterisanymphomaniac.HercharacterwasrefreshedinJeanRhys'novelWideSargassoSea(1966)whichtoldthestoryofRochester'sill-fatedCreolewife.

2.1SocialBackground
IntheVictoriansocialandculturalcontext,womanwasdefinedas“sexuallypure”,“passive”,“dependent”,“self-denying”and“theother.”
InherintroductiontoananthologyofessaysontheVictorianwoman,MarthaVicinuspointsoutthattheVictorian“perfectlady”shouldconformtothefollowingidealmodeloffemininity:
Beforemarriage,ayounggirlwasbroughtuptobeperfectlyinnocentandsexuallyignorant.Oncemarried,theperfectladydidnotwork.Hersocialandintellectualgrowthwasconfinedtothefamilyandclosefriends.Herstatuswastotallydependentupontheeconomicpositionofherfatherandthenherhusband.ThroughouttheVictorianperiodthe‘perfectlady’asanidealoffemininitywastenaciousandall-pervasive.Themarriedwomen,asVicinusmentions,withintheVictorianculturewereconfinedtothedomesticsphere.Astothedutiesofwomen,thatwomanhadtosacrificeherselftoserveherhusbandandchildrenandtosomeextentshemustbe“enduringly,incorruptiblygood,instinctively,infalliblywise—wisenotforself-development,butforself-renunciation,wisenotwiththenarrownessofinsolentandlovelesspride,butwiththepassionategentlenessofaninfinitelyvariable…modestyofservice”.Sheshouldberestrictedtothedomesticitytoofferthemodestserviceforherhusband,andsetupagoodmodeltoguideherchildren.Furthermore,sheshouldbeeducated,butthepurposeofitistomakehercapableofappreciatingtheconversationofherhusband,ratherthanshareherownfeelingswithhim.
Awoman,inanyrankoflife,oughttoknowwhateverherhusbandislikelytoknow,buttoknowitinadifferentway.Tosumup,theVictorianwomenaresubmissivewivesfortheirhusbandsandgoodmothersfortheirchildren.
Inadditiontotheabove-mentionedopinionsthathelpedtoconstitutetheVictorianidealimageofwomanhoodintheVictoriansociety,theBiblewasalsoadoptedbyVictorianpatriarchytoimposethenotionsofself-denial,sexualpurityandsubmissiononwomen,andtolegitimatizemen’ssuperiorityandruleoverwomen.FromtheBible,menandwomencoulddeducetheidealpatterntheCreatorhadcreatedatthebeginningoftheworld.
2.2TheNovel
WeknowJaneEyrewaswrittenin1847,159yearsago.JaneEyreistheclassiclovestory.
Theheroineofthenovel,JaneEyrelostherparentswhenshewasonlyababyandbecameanorphan.ShewassentintoGatesheadHall,heruncleReed’s.However,heraunt,Mrs.ReedtreatedhercruellyafterMrs.Readhaddied.Janereceivedlotsofneglectandabuse.AtThornfield,thoughJanewashumbleandplain,butthemasterofThornfield,Mr.Rochesterstilllovedherbecauseofherintelligentspeaking,independentattitudeandcourageousbehavior.JanealsolovedRochesterbecausehetreatedherequally.Theyplannedtomarry.Ontheweddingdayatthechurch,astrangercalledMasonappeared.Mr.Masondeclaredtheexistenceofanimpedimenttothemarriage.HesaidRochestermarriedMason’ssister.Mason’ssisterwasmadandlockedinaroomofThornfield.Now,JanehasnochoicebuttoleaveThornfield.JaneroamedfortwodaysandwasacceptedbyStJohnRiversandhissisters.ThenJanegotinheritancefromherUncleJohnEyre.Shesharedtheinheritancewithhercousins.Mr.StJohndecidedtogoIndiaasamissionary.HeaskedJanetogowithhim.JanerefusedStJohn’ssuggestionofmarriage,becausesheknewwhatStJohnlovewasGod,nother.Finally,sheseemedtohearRochester’scall,sheretunedtoThornfield.Butnow,Thornfieldwasruinedinabigfire.Rochester’smadwifediedandMr.Rochesterwasalreadyblindeyes,withonlyonearmleft.InspiteofRochester’sdisability,Janemarriedhim.Fromthenon,theylivedahappylife.
III.AnalysisoftheMainCharacters
3.1JaneEyre
ThedevelopmentofJaneEyre’scharacteriscentraltothenovel.Fromthebeginning,Janepossessesasenseofherself-worthanddignity,acommitmenttojusticeandprinciple,atrustinGod,andapassionatedisposition.Herintegrityiscontinuallytestedoverthecourseofthenovel,andJanemustlearntobalancethefrequentlyconflictingaspectsofhersoastofindcontentment.
Anorphansinceearlychildhood,Janefeelsexiledandostracizedatthebeginningofthenovel,andthecrueltreatmentshereceivesfromherAuntReedandhercousinsonlyexacerbatesherfeelingofalienation.JaneandMrs.Reedhadaface-to-faceconflict.HereisJane’sthoughtinherheart:
‘yetinwhatdarknesswasthementalbattlefought!
Icouldnotanswertheinwardquestion—whyIthussuffered.’(Chapter2p.8)Accordingtothissentenceitseems,wecanstraightintotheinnersideofthefigures,seethesoulofoneself—simplybeingregardedasacommonperson,justthesameasanyothergirlaround.InLowoodSchool,Jane’sbodyandsoulweredeeplyhurt.Heresheremainedinitforeightyears;sixasitspupilandtwoasteacher.HelenBurnsisJane’sgoodfriend.ThusJanesaystoHelenBurns:
