Berningerandhercolleaguesconductedastudythatlookedattheabilityofstudentstocompletevarietiesofwritingtasks---bothonacomputerandbyhand.Thestudy,publishedin2009,foundthatwhenwritingwithapenandpaper,participantswrotelongeressaysandmorecompletesentencesandhadafasterwordproductionrate.
Inamorerecentstudy,Berningerlookedatwhatrolespellingplaysinastudent’swriting
skillsandfoundthathowwellchildrenspellistiedtohowwelltheycanwrite.“Spellingmakessomeofthethinkingpartsofthebrainactivewhichhelpsusaccessourvocabulary,wordmeaningandconcepts.Itisallowingourwrittenlanguagetoconnectwithideas.”Berningersaid.
Spellinghelpsstudentstranslateideasintowordsintheirmindfirstandthentotranscribe“thosewordsinthemindwrittensymbolsonpaperorkeyboardandscreen,”thestudysaid.Seeingthewordsinthe“mind’seye”helpschildrennotonlytoturntheirideasintowords,saysBerninger,butalsotospotspellingmistakeswhentheywritethewordsdownandtocorrectthenovertime.
“Inourcomputerage,somepeoplebelievethatwedon’thavetoteachspellingbecausewehavespellchecks,”shesaid.“Butuntilachildhasafunctionalspellingabilityofaboutafifthgradelevel,theywon’thavetheknowledgetochoosethecorrectspellingamongtheoptionsgivenbythecomputer.”
