ItisthroughBeringiathatsmallgroupsoflargemammalhunters,slowlyexpandingtheirhuntingterritories,eventuallycolonizedNorthandSouthAmerica.Onthisarchaeologistsgenerallyagree,butthatiswheretheagreementstopsOnebroadareaofdisagreementinexplainingthepeoplingoftheAmericasisthedomainofpaleoecologists,butitiscriticaltounderstandinghumanhistory:

ThepresenceofmammalspeciesthatrequiregrasslandvegetationhasledArcticbiologistDaleGuthrietoarguethatwhilecoldanddry,theremusthavebeenbroadareasofdensevegetationtosupportherdsofmammoth,horse,andbison.Further,nearlyalloftheice-agefaunahadteeththatindicateanadaptationtograssesandsedges;theycouldnothavebeensupportedbyamodernfloraofmossesandlichens.Guthriehasalsodemonstratedthatthelandscapemusthavebeensubjecttointenseandcontinuouswinds,especiallyinwinter.Hemakesthisargumentbasedontheanatomyofhorseandbison,whichdonothavetheabilitytosearchforfoodthroughdeepsnowcover.Theyneedlandscapeswithstrongwindsthatremovethewintersnows,exposingthedrygrassesbeneath.Guthrieappliedtheterm“mammothsteppe"tocharacterizethislandscape.
