IamstandingonMacquarieIsland,intheSouth-westPacificOcean,halfwaybetweenAustraliaandAntarctica.Strongwindsandstormyseashavehelpedsculptitslong,thinshape.Thegreengrassandbarerockofitslandscapecontrastdramatically,
(1)givingitawildandnaturalbeauty.Novisitorwouldthinkitsurprising
(2)thattheislandisaUNESCOWorldHeritageSite.(3)Norwouldtheyfailtoimaginehowitsnativeinhabitants,includingroyalpenguins,kingpenguins,andelephantseals,existedinperfectharmonywiththeirnaturalhabitatforthousandsofyears.
Buttheisland’smorerecenthistorytellsadifferentstory.It’satragicstory(4)thatbeganin1810whenhumansarrivedontheisland.Intheirshipstheyunknowinglybroughtratsandmice.Thesesmallanimalsquicklytookovertheisland,(5)eatingthebirds’eggsandattackingbabybirds.Catswerebroughttotheislandtocontroltheratsandmice.Unfortunately,thecatssubsequentlydevelopedanappetiteforthebirds,too.
Meanwhile,rabbitswereintroducedtotheislandasasourceoffoodforhumans.Looseontheisland,theydidwhatrabbitsdobest—theymultipliedrapidlyandbeganeatingthenativevegetationanddiggingholes,(6)whichcausedsoilerosion.Theexplodingrabbitpopulationprovidedplentifulfoodforthecats,(7)meaningthatthenumberofcatsalsoincreased.Thisinturnledtomorecatshuntingthebirds.Theendresultwas(8)thatparakeets,oncelargeinnumberandnativetotheisland,diedoutin1891.
EvenafterMacquarieIslandbecameanofficialnaturereserveinthe1970s,therabbitsremainedoutofcontrol.Expertsfeltitnecessary(9)tocomeupwithaplantoremovealltherabbitsfromtheisland.Withthisgoalinmind,aviruswasreleasedontotheisland.Butalthoughtheviruscausedtherabbitpopulationtodecreasefrom130,000toaround10,000,italsomeantlessfoodforthecats.Thecatsinconsequenceturnedtheirattention—andtheirstomachs—backtothenativebirds,(10)killingupto60,000eachyear.Inthe1980s,trapsanddogswereusedtocatchthecats.ThelastMacquarieIslandcatwascaughtin2000.
Butasthesayinggoes,“Whilethecat’saway,themicewillplay.”Withthedepartureofthecatsfromtheisland,themouseandratpopulationstartedtoincrease.Andrememberthose10,000orsorabbits?
(11)Itturnedoutthattheydevelopedanimmunitytothevirus,andtheirnumbersexplodedonceagain.Then,in2006,therabbits’diggingcausedsomelandtocollapse,andkilledasubstantialnumberofpenguins.Thisincidentmadeitclear(12)thattherat,mouseandrabbitproblemneededsolvingonceandforall.
