Chapter1Introduction
Overthelastdecades,withtherapiddevelopmentofscienceandtechnologyas
wellasthecomprehensivesocietyprogress,manhasenteredanentirelynewageof
knowledgeeconomy.LearningtolearnandLifelonglearningabilityhavebecomea
necessaryconditionforhumansurvivalanddevelopment.Learningcannolongerbe
dichotomizedintoaplaceandtimetoacquireknowledge(school)andaplaceandtime
toapplytheknowledgeacquired(theworkplace)(GerhardFischer,2000).Inother
words,learningisanactivelifelongprocesswherelearnerscannotlearnsimplyfrom
beingtaughtandhavetolearnbythemselvesbecauseknowledgetheyhaveacquired
canbetransformedintotheirownbyunderstanding,digestingandmemorizing.Under
theinfluenceoflifelonglearning,itseemsespeciallyimportanttostudylanguage
learningstrategiesandcultivateautonomouslearningabilityforsecondandforeign
languagelearners.Languagelearningstrategiesarethepreconditionofimproving
learningeffectivenessanddevelopingautonomouslearningabilities.Strategiesare
especiallyimportantforlanguagelearningbecausetheyaretoolsforactive,
self-directedinvolvement,whichisessentialfordevelopingcommunicative
competence.Appropriatelanguagelearningstrategiesresultinimprovedproficiency
andgreaterself-confidence(Oxford,2008:
1).Learningstrategiesarekeystogreater
autonomyandmoremeaningfullearning(op.cit.:
41).InChina,thereisalsoanold
saying“Giveamanafishandyoufeedhimforaday.Teachamantofishandyou
feedhimforalifetime.”Itmeansthatthekeyofteachingistotransferknowledgeas
wellasmethods.TheCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguages:
Learning,Teaching,Assessment(CEF)acknowledgestheroleoflearningstrategies
(studyskills)(2001:
107-108).Itisinthisbackgroundthatmoreandmoreteachers
andresearchersacknowledgetheimportanceoflearningstrategiesforlanguage
learningandarepayingmoreandmoreattentiontolanguagelearningstrategies.
Languageisanimportanttoolofcommunicationandhumanparticipationin
socialactivities.Inthe21stcenturywhensociallifeandeconomicactivitiesare
increasinglyglobal,itisofgreatsignificancetolearnandmasterasecondorforeign
language,especiallyEnglishasaninternationallanguage.Languageconsistsofthree

basicelements:
pronunciation,vocabularyandgrammar.Thevocabularysizeone
acquiresisonecriterionformeasuringlearners’Englishcompetenceandmaydirectly
affectlearners’abilityoflistening,speaking,readingandwriting.Accordingto
Zimmerman,“Vocabularyiscentraltolanguageandofcriticalimportancetothe
typicallanguagelearner”(1997:
5-19).Lackofvocabularywillresultinlackof
meaningfulcommunication.TheAmericanmagazineTimemadeasurveyofsuccessful
peopleofallcirclesandfoundthatoneoftheircommonfeaturesis“agoodvocabulary
size”theyhave.Ofcourse,grammarisonepartoflanguageandcanhelpusspeakand
writecorrectly.However,withoutvocabulary,apersoncannotspeakandwrite
naturallyandeffectively.Wilkins(1972:
111)declaresthat“Withoutgrammarvery
littlecanbeconveyed;withoutvocabularynothingcanbeconveyed”.Effective
vocabularylearningisthepreconditionofimprovingthecapabilityoflanguage
application.
Asamatteroffact,tomostChinesestudents,thefirstmajorproblemthey
encounterwhentheystudyEnglishisvocabularylearning(WuXia&WangQiang,
