Chapter1Introduction

Overthelastdecades,withtherapiddevelopmentofscienceandtechnologyas

wellasthecomprehensivesocietyprogress,manhasenteredanentirelynewageof

knowledgeeconomy.LearningtolearnandLifelonglearningabilityhavebecomea

necessaryconditionforhumansurvivalanddevelopment.Learningcannolongerbe

dichotomizedintoaplaceandtimetoacquireknowledge（school）andaplaceandtime

toapplytheknowledgeacquired（theworkplace）（GerhardFischer,2000）.Inother

words,learningisanactivelifelongprocesswherelearnerscannotlearnsimplyfrom

beingtaughtandhavetolearnbythemselvesbecauseknowledgetheyhaveacquired

canbetransformedintotheirownbyunderstanding,digestingandmemorizing.Under

theinfluenceoflifelonglearning,itseemsespeciallyimportanttostudylanguage

learningstrategiesandcultivateautonomouslearningabilityforsecondandforeign

languagelearners.Languagelearningstrategiesarethepreconditionofimproving

learningeffectivenessanddevelopingautonomouslearningabilities.Strategiesare

especiallyimportantforlanguagelearningbecausetheyaretoolsforactive,

self-directedinvolvement,whichisessentialfordevelopingcommunicative

competence.Appropriatelanguagelearningstrategiesresultinimprovedproficiency

andgreaterself-confidence（Oxford,2008:

1）.Learningstrategiesarekeystogreater

autonomyandmoremeaningfullearning（op.cit.:

41）.InChina,thereisalsoanold

saying“Giveamanafishandyoufeedhimforaday.Teachamantofishandyou

feedhimforalifetime.”Itmeansthatthekeyofteachingistotransferknowledgeas

wellasmethods.TheCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguages:

Learning,Teaching,Assessment（CEF）acknowledgestheroleoflearningstrategies

（studyskills）（2001:

107-108）.Itisinthisbackgroundthatmoreandmoreteachers

andresearchersacknowledgetheimportanceoflearningstrategiesforlanguage

learningandarepayingmoreandmoreattentiontolanguagelearningstrategies.

Languageisanimportanttoolofcommunicationandhumanparticipationin

socialactivities.Inthe21stcenturywhensociallifeandeconomicactivitiesare

increasinglyglobal,itisofgreatsignificancetolearnandmasterasecondorforeign

language,especiallyEnglishasaninternationallanguage.Languageconsistsofthree

basicelements:

pronunciation,vocabularyandgrammar.Thevocabularysizeone

acquiresisonecriterionformeasuringlearners’Englishcompetenceandmaydirectly

affectlearners’abilityoflistening,speaking,readingandwriting.Accordingto

Zimmerman,“Vocabularyiscentraltolanguageandofcriticalimportancetothe

typicallanguagelearner”（1997:

5-19）.Lackofvocabularywillresultinlackof

meaningfulcommunication.TheAmericanmagazineTimemadeasurveyofsuccessful

peopleofallcirclesandfoundthatoneoftheircommonfeaturesis“agoodvocabulary

size”theyhave.Ofcourse,grammarisonepartoflanguageandcanhelpusspeakand

writecorrectly.However,withoutvocabulary,apersoncannotspeakandwrite

naturallyandeffectively.Wilkins（1972:

111）declaresthat“Withoutgrammarvery

littlecanbeconveyed;withoutvocabularynothingcanbeconveyed”.Effective

vocabularylearningisthepreconditionofimprovingthecapabilityoflanguage

application.

Asamatteroffact,tomostChinesestudents,thefirstmajorproblemthey

encounterwhentheystudyEnglishisvocabularylearning（WuXia&WangQiang,
