Theancientcamels,calledparacamelus,wereupto29percentlargerthantoday’scamels.Paracamelushadsomesimilarcharacteristicstomoderncamels.Theyhadwide,flatfeetandhumps(驼峰)madeoffat.Thesequalitieshelpedparacamelussurvivedifficult,coldwinterconditions.Theirwidefeethelpedthemtraveloverunstablesurfaces,likesnoworsand.Andthefattyhumpshelpedthemsurvivewhentherewasnotenoughfood.
“Thecharacteristicsthatallowcamelstosurviveinthedesertwouldalsosupportanimalsthatliveinverycoldenvironments,”saysSusanLawler.Sheisabiologist.“Thisstudygivesusanexcusetothinkabouthowadaptationsforoneenvironmentcanleadtosurvivalinanother.”

ThesearenotthefirstparacamelusfossilsfoundinNorthAmerica.However,beforethisdiscovery,scientistsdidnotrealizehowfarnorththeanimalshadlived.
Millionsofyearsago,theArcticwasmuchwarmerthanitistoday.Somescientistsbelievethatastheclimatechanges,theArcticmayactuallyseeareturntothoseancient,warmertemperatures.“Thecamelisanambassadorforclimatechange,”saysJohnGosse,whoco-authoredthestudyontheparacamelusfossil.
ResearchersbelievethatparacameluseventuallymigratedintoEastAsiaandEurope.Fromtheretheyeventuallyevolvedintothemodern-daycamelsfoundintheMiddleEast,Africa,andCentralAsia.
