wetsnowthatcouldfallwithoutwarming.Anavalanche(雪崩)onceclosedthepath,killing63people.FormanywhomadeittoDawson,however,therewardswereworth
thedifficulttrip.Ofthefirst20,000peoplewhodugforgold,4,000gotrich.About
100ofthesestayedrichmenfortherestoftheirlives.
Butnomatterhowrichtheywere,Dawsonwasnevercomfortable.Necessitieslike
foodandwoodwereveryexpensive.Butsoon,thegoldthatDawsondependedonhadall
beenfound.Thecitywascrowdedwithdisappointedpeoplewithnointerestinsettling
down,andwhentheyheardtherewerenewgolddiscoveriesinAlaska,theyleftDawson
Cityasquicklyastheyhadcome.Today,peoplestillcomeandgo—toseewherethe
