RomanStulerONSemiconductorINTRODUCTIONThisdocumentdescribesallthenecessarydesignstepsthatneedtobeevaluatedwhendesigningtheNCP1395controllerinanLLCresonantconvertertopology.A240WACDCconverterhasbeenselectedforthetypicalapplication.Thedesignrequirementsforour240WACDCconverterexampleareasfollows:
RequirementMinMaxUnitInputVoltage90265VacOutputVoltage24VdcOutputPower0240WOperatingFrequency65125kHzEfficiencyUnderFullLoad90%NoLoadConsumption1000mWLLCseriesresonantconvertertopologyhasbeenselectedtomeetefficiencyrequirements.TheNCP1395resonantmodecontrollerisaveryattractivesolutionforsuchdesignsbecauseitoffersthefollowingfeatures.BrownoutProtectionInputThedivideddowninputvoltageoftheconverterispermanentlymonitoredbytheBrownoutpin(pinname).Ifthevoltageonthebulkcapacitorfallsoutsideofthedesiredoperatingrange,thecontrollerdriveoutputwillbeshutoff.ThisfeatureisnecessaryforanLLCtopologybecauseitisusuallyoptimizedtooperateoveranarrowrangeofbulkvoltages.ImmediatelyFaultInputThisinputcanbeusedasashutdowninputinsomeapplications(LCDtelevisionSMPS,etc.).ItcanalsobeusedtoinduceskipmodeoperationoftheLLCconverter,duringthelightloadconditions.Standbyconsumptionofwholesupplycanthusbesignificantlydecreased.TimerBasedFaultProtectionTheconverterstopsoperationafteraprogrammeddelaywhenthisinputisactivated.Thisprotectioncanbeimplementedasacumulativeorintegratingcharacteristic.Thusundertransientloadconditionstheconverteroutputwillnotbeturnedoff,unlesstheextremeloadconditionexceedsthetimeout.InternalTransconductanceAmplifierThisinternaltransconductanceamplifiercanbeusedtocreateeffectiveoverloadprotection.AstheresultthepowersupplycanbeoperatedineitherCVorCCmode.Thisfeatureisveryusefulforthebatterychargersapplications.CommonCollectorOptocouplerConnectionTheopencollectoroutputallowsmultipleinputstothefeedbackpin,forexampleovercurrentsensingcircuit,overtemperaturesensor,etc.Theadditionalinputcanpullupthefeedbackvoltagelevelandtakeoverthevoltagefeedbackloop.PleaserefertotheNCP1395A/Bdatasheetforadetaileddescriptionofallthefunctions.DemoBoardConnectionDescriptionTheschematicforthe240WdemoboardisshowninFigure1.Thedemoboardcontainsthreeblocks:
