I.Introduction

WeddingcustomsinbothChinaandwesterncountrieshasaffectedbytheir

differentculture.Asamostgrandthinginpeople’slife,ithasalwaysattractedahighdegreeofattention.Weddingisveryimportanttoone’slife,notonlytothecoupleinvolvedbutalsoforbothfamilies.Weddingisacelebrationinwhichcouplesbegintheirmarriedlife.Duetothe

differentculturalorigins,religions,geographicallocationsandmarriageconceptstherearemanydifferencesexistinginthetwokindsofweddingcustoms.Chinaisacountrywithanancientcivilizationandalonghistory,

Therefore,theChineseweddingiselaborateandwithmanyimplicitmeanings.Itisdeeplyinfluencedbythecomplextraditionalculturesandetiquettes.DifferentfromChinesewedding,inwesterncountries,thewholeweddingisromanticandblessed.ThedifferencesexistinginChineseandwestern

marriagecustomareinevitable.AlthoughweddingcustomsmutuallypenetratebetweenChinaandwesterncountrieswiththesociety'sprogressandthetransformationofpeople'sthinking,therearesomeculturaldifferences

onweddingcustomsbetweenChinaandwesterncountries.

Althoughmanyweddingcustomshaveexperiencedvariouschangesastimegoesby,asthebasicpattern,“sixetiquettes”inChinahasnotchangedmuch.

betrothalpresentstothegirl’sfamily,discussingthedateofmarriageandmeetingthebridearestillessentialandcoreinweddingcustom,whileavalidmarriageshouldexperienceproposal,surnames,choosingthedayand

holdingtheweddinginwesterncountries.However,botheasternandwesternweddinghavetheirownimportance.

Inthispaper,theauthorwouldliketomakeacomparativestudyofthetwodifferentkindsofweddingcustomsinChinaandwesterncountries,suchas

illustratingsomeculturaldifferencesbetweensomewesterncountriesandChina,andanalyzingthereasonsforthosedifferencesindeepinside.

II.TheTwoKindsofWeddingCustoms

Eachcountryintheworldhasitsowntraditionalcustomsbecauseof

differencesinculture.Weddingcustomsisoneofthecustomswhich

influencedbyculture.Weddingcustomsalsoisaninterestingtopic.Itattractsmuchcareofyoungpeople.Chinaandwesterncountriesbothhavetheirownweddingcustoms.However,theproceduresofweddingcustomsare

completelydifferentindetail.

A.TheMajorProceduresofChineseWeddingCustoms

Asamostgrandetiquette,weddingcustomshasalwaysbeenahighdegreeofattention.ThetraditionalChinesemarriagecomplywithsixprocedures,

whicharetheso-called"sixetiquettes."1Astimegoesby,althoughmanyweddingcustomshaveexperiencedsomechanges,"Sixetiquettes"asthe

basicpatternhavenotchangedmuchinthemodernChinesewedding.Itisstillessentialandcoreintoday’sChineseweddingcustomaswellasthetraditionalChineseweddingcustoms.Therefore,theauthorwillexplainthe"sixetiquettes"inthefollowingpart.

InChineseweddingcustoms,Thesixproceduresareproposing,askingthename,askingforfortune,betrothalgiftpresenting,discussingthedateofmarriageandmeetingthebride.2

Proposingisthefirstetiquetteinmarriageandisthefirstmeetingbetweenthemembersinthetwofamilies.BothChinaandwesterncountrieshavethisprocedure,buttheyaretotallydifferentindetails.InfeudalsocietyofChina,amarriagewouldbedecidednotbytheyouth’slove,butbytheirparents'desires.Onlyafteramatchmaker'sintroductionandwhenparentsbelievedthatthefamilyconditionsofthetwomatched,wouldthemarriage

procedureswentforward.Conditionsthatshouldbetakenintoconsiderationincludedwealthandsocialstatusaswell.Aftertheproposing,itcomestothesecondprocedures,thatisaskingthename,whichmeansthematchmaker’sinquiringaboutthegirl'sname.Inancienttimesthegirl’snamewouldnotbeknownbyotherpeopleuntilthegirlwasinanageofmarriage.Soonemusthavethematchmakerandinformoftheman’sfamilythroughacard.Andtheman’sfamilywouldknowthegirl’sname.After
