Introduction
Thisworkshopsimulatestheshearingofalapjoint.Alapjointdescribesatechniqueforjoiningtwopiecesofmaterialbyoverlappingthem.InthemodelshowninFigureW2–1,twoaluminumplatesareoverlapped;atitaniumrivetpenetratesthetwoplates,thusconnectingthemtogether.TherivetismodeledwithC3D8Relements;theplateswithC3D8Ielements.Becauseofsymmetry,onlyhalfofthejointismodeledtoreducecomputationalcost.Frictionalcontactisassumed.

2.Runthescriptws_contact_lap_joint.pyusingthefollowingcommand:
abaquscaestartup=ws_contact_lap_joint.py.
TheabovecommandcreatesanAbaqus/CAEdatabasenamedlap_joint.caeinthecurrentdirectory.Thegeometry,mesh,andmaterialdefinitionsareincludedinthemodel.Youwilladdthenecessarydatatocompletethemodel,runthejob,andfinallypostprocesstheresults.
Part1:
Analysisusingcontactpairs
Thisproblemcoulduseeitherthecontactpairsorthegeneralcontactalgorithm.Wewillconsiderbothapproaches,beginningwiththecontactpairalgorithmtoillustratetheuseoftheautomaticcontactpairdetectiontoolinAbaqus/CAE.
ConfiguringtheAnalysis
Theanalysisconsistsofasinglegeneralstaticstep.Thestepwillconsidergeometricallynonlineareffects.Theinitialtimeincrementsizeofthestepwillbesetto5%ofthetotaltimeperiod.
Tocreateageneral,staticanalysisstep:
1.IntheModelTree,double-clickSteps.
2.IntheCreateStepdialogbox:
a.Fromthelistofavailablegeneralprocedures,selectStatic,Generalifitisnotalreadyselected,andclickContinue.
3.IntheEditStepdialogbox:
a.IntheBasictabbedpage,toggleonNlgeom.
b.SwitchtotheIncrementationtabbedpageandsettheinitialincrementsizeto0.05.
c.ClickOKtocreatethestep.
Definingboundaryconditions
Yournexttaskwillbetodefinetheboundaryconditionsthatwillactontheassembly.Oneendoftheassemblyisfixedwhiletheotherispulledalongthelengthoftheplates(X-direction).Also,asinglenodeisfixedinthevertical(Z-)directiontopreventrigidbodymotionandthenodesonthesymmetryplanearefixedinthedirectionnormaltotheplane(Y-direction).Predefinedsetsareavailabletofacilitatetheprocedure.
1.IntheModelTree,expandtheSetscontainerunderneaththeAssembly.
2.Selectthefollowingsetsinturntohighlightthemintheviewport:
corner,fix,pull,andsymm.
ThefirstofthesesetswillbeusedtopreventrigidbodymotionintheZ-direction;thenexttwowillbeusedtofixtheendofoneplateandpulltheendoftheother,respectively;thelastonewillbeusedtoimposesymmetryconditions.
4.IntheModelTree,double-clickBCstocreateanewboundarycondition.
5.IntheCreateBoundaryConditiondialogbox,selectDisplacement/RotationastheboundaryconditiontypeandStep-1asthestepinwhichtoapplytheboundarycondition.NametheboundaryconditionfixandclickContinue.
6.IntheRegionSelectiondialogbox,selectfix(ifthedialogboxdoesnotappear,clickSetsinthepromptarea).
7.IntheEditBoundaryConditiondialogbox,setU1equalto0.0andclickOKtoclosethedialogbox.
8.Usingasimilartechnique,assignanon-zeroboundaryconditionnamedpulltothesetpull(setU1equalto2.5units).
9.Assignaboundaryconditionnamedsymmetrytothesetsymm(thevalueofU2isequalto0.0).
10.Finally,constrainthesetcornerintheU3direction.
Definingcontactproperties
Frictionalcontactisassumedbetweenallmatingparts.Thecoefficientoffrictionis0.05.Usethepenaltyconstraintenforcementmethodforboththenormalandtangentialbehaviors.Forthenormalbehavior,scalethepenaltystiffnessto10%ofthedefaultvalue.
