“sharingtheopportunitytohaveacolorfullife,sharingtheopportunitytomakedreamsareality,sharingtheopportunityofthesamemotherlandinthesameagetogrowandprogresstogether.”Incontrast,WesternEuropeanandAmericanculturesemphasizeindividualism,thepursuitofpersonalfreedomandhappiness.9TheChinesedreamhasalonghistorybehindit.TheAmericandreamreliessolelyonexperience.AconsiderablepartofChinasself-confidenceinachievingitsdreamcomesfromhistory.TheChinesenationhas5,000yearsofcivilization.Ithasprosperednumeroustimesthroughouthistoryandwasoncetherichestandmostpowerfulcountryintheworld.GeneralSecretaryXiJinpingsuseoftheword“rejuvenation”inhisphrase“theChinesedreamtoachievethegreatrejuvenationoftheChinesenation”revealsoptimismandconfidence.Incontrast,Americaonlyhastwoorthreehundredyearsofhistory.Fromitsfounding,theU.S.hasdependedupontheexploitationofothercountriesresourcesandtalentstograduallybecomeasuperpower.Itsdreamistoextendthisreality,topreventanychallengestoitspower,sothatitmayalwaysdreamitsdream.10TheChinesedreamcombineseveryoneswisdomandeffort.TheAmericandreamreliesonindividualism.TorealizetheChinesedream,everyonespowermustbecondensed,eachpersonaddingstrengthandsteadfastdiligence;everypersonsintelligenceandwisdommustbeutilized,strivingtowardonedirection.RealizingtheChinesedreamdependsoncollectiveconsciousness,collectivepowerandcollectivewisdom.Toachievethedreamnow,consciousnessmustbeunified,onetargetmustbeclarified.America,however,hasfollowedapragmaticpathsinceitsfounding:

tosimplypursueindividualprosperityandhappiness,sothatthecombinationofindividualsuccessesconstitutesthestrengthofthenation.Chinesepeoplecandogreatthings,butfirsttheymustunifytheirthinking.11TheChinesedreamisaboutthepeoplesglory.TheAmericandreamisfortheindividualsglory.SincetheOpiumWars,territoryhasbeenseized,peoplehavebeenravaged,liveshavebeendestroyed,povertyhasbeenpushedtointolerablelimits,treatieshaveforcedhumiliatingtermsandcatastropheshavestrucktimeandagainthesearethenationswounds.Inrecenthistory,howmanyidealistshaveshedbloodfornationaldignityandsecuritysothatthepeoplemightliveinpeaceandworkcontentedly?

AcountrywithoutsuchahistoryofpainwillhavedifficultyunderstandingthethirstoftheChinesepeople.Americasimplydoesnothavethiskindofpain,soitcannothavethiskindofdream.Thus,theAmericandreamemphasizesindividualprosperity,successandsocialadvancement.12Thankyouforlistening13
