Unfortunately,thelevelofphysicalactivitydeclinesduringadolescencesothatabout70%ofAmericanadultsaresedentaryorinactiveandarebelowtherecommendedlevelforhealthbenefits.Accordingtothe2000NationalCollegeHealthAssessment,57%ofmaleand61%offemalecollegestudentsreportedthattheyperformednovigorousormoderateexerciseonatleast3oftheprevious7days.Physicalinactivity,aseriousandpervasivepublichealthconcern,hasbeendesignatedasoneoftheprioritiesintheHealthyPeople2010ObjectivesPhysicalinactivityhasbeenassociatedwiththeriskofseveralchronicdiseasesandhealthconditions.Studentsreportedthattheyhadspentalmost30hoursinatypicalweekengagedinsedentarybehaviors,mostlystudying(13.25±9.16hr),buttheyalsoindicatedtheyhadparticipatedinsomeexerciseatthebeginningoftheclass(Table1).Moreofthesestudentsengagedinadequatelevelsofmoderateactivity(≥5oftheprevious7days,30.6%vs19.5%)andvigorousactivity(≥3oftheprevious7days,53.2%vs37.6%)thanstudentswhoweresampledinthe1995NCHRBS.Morestudentsinthissamplealsoexercised,comparedwiththosesurveyedinthe2000NCHAsurveyonparticipationinvigorousormoderateexerciseatleast3timesinthepast7days(73.1%vs40.5%).
