Since1945morethanonemillionstudentsfromallovertheworldhavestudiedintheUnitedStates.Inarecentsingleyear,thereweremorethan150,000foreignstudentswhocametotheUnitedStates'institutionsofhigherlearning.Theywerewelcomedandmostweresuccessfulintheiracademicstudies.ForeignstudentswhostudyintheUnitedStatesbenefitalotfromtheAmericaneducationalsystem.
Threedevelopmentsthattoday'sstudentsarebenefitingfromstartedmorethanacenturyagofollowingtheCivilWar.Thefirstofthesewastherapidgrowthoftechnologicalandprofessionaleducationtomeettheurgentdemandsofacomplexindustrialandurbansociety.Newschoolsoftechnology,engineering,architecture,lawandmedicineflourished.Thesecondwastheprovisionforgraduatestudy,suchaswhathadlongexistedinFranceandGermany.HarvardandJohnHopkinsUniversitiesquicklytooktheleadinthisfield,butthestateuniversitiesdidnotlagfarbehind.Thethirdwastheincreasedprovisionfortheeducationofwomen.Thisincludedtheestablishmentofnewwomen'scolleges,suchasVassar,WellesleyandSmith,andtheadoptionofco-educationinallthenewstateuniversitiesaswellasinmanyprivateinstitutions.Thesedevelopments,thegrowthoftechnologicalandpr
