CharlotteBronte’slifewasmarkedbypersonaltragedy,butsherespondedwithverygreatcourage.ShewasborninYorkshireinthenorthofEnglandin1816,thethirdofthesixchildrenofapoorclergyman.Soonafterherbirth,herfatherwasappointedtothechurchinHaworth,aremotevillage.Hermotherdied,andin1824shewassentawaytoschool.Hertwoeldersistersweretakenillthere
anddiedandtheremainingchildrenweremainlyeducatedathome,wheretheyreadwidelyandinventedfantasyworldsoftheirown.
Charlotteworkedasateacherandgoverness,andin1842wenttoBelgiumwithhersisterEmilytoimprovetheirFrenchbecausetheyhopedtoopentheirownschool.Theplancametonothingso,asanalternativewayofmakingaliving,shepersuadedhersistersthattheyshouldeachwriteanovel.Herfirst,TheProfessor,wasrejected,butsheimmediatelywroteJaneEyre,whichwasaninstantsuccess.
Yetwithintwoyearsherbrotherandsistershadalldied.Shewrotetwomorenovelsbutenjoyedonlyafewyearsoffame.Shemarriedherfather’scurate,theReverendArthurNicholls,in1854,anddiedinchildbirththefollowingyear.
II.BackgroundandPlotSummary
1.Background
JaneEyreisanextraordinarymixture,blendinganimaginativevisioninfluencedbythestoriesCharlotteBrontehadreadwhenshewasyoungwithherowndeeplyfeltpersonalexperience.ShehadgrownupinaremotevillagereadingthemagazinestoriesoftheRomanticperiod,fullofhauntedcastles,ghostsandmonsterslikeFrankenstein(publishedin1818).Fromtheseshegottheherowithamysteriouspast,themadwomanintheatticandtheweddingsuddenlybrokenoff,andlikehercontemporary,Dickens,shereliedoncoincidencetoresolvetheplot.Butherownlifewasadeterminedstruggletoretainself-respectasateacherandgoverness,andshewaseffectivelytheheadofherfamily.TheimpressionJaneEyremakesonusowesmuchmoretothewayCharlotteBronteinfusedtheheroine,Jane,withherownpersonalitythantothedramatic
featuresdescribedabove.

OnceattheLowoodSchool,Janefindsthatherlifeisfarfromidyllic.Theschool’sheadmasterisMr.Brocklehurst,acruel,hypocritical,andabusiveman.Brocklehurstpreachesadoctrineofpovertyandprivationtohisstudentswhileusingtheschool’sfundstoprovideawealthyandopulentlifestyleforhisownfamily.AtLowood,JanebefriendsayounggirlnamedHelenBurns,whosestrong,martyrlikeattitudetowardtheschool’smiseriesisbothhelpfulanddispleasingtoJane.AmassivetyphusepidemicsweepsLowood,andHelendiesofconsumption.TheepidemicalsoresultsinthedepartureofMr.BrocklehurstbyattractingattentiontotheinsalubriousconditionsatLowood.AfteragroupofmoresympatheticgentlementakesBrocklehurst’splace,Jane’slifeimprovesdramatically.ShespendseightmoreyearsatLowood,sixasastudentandtwoasateacher.
Afterteachingfortwoyears,Janeyearnsfornewexperiences.SheacceptsagovernesspositionatamanorcalledThornfield,wheresheteachesalivelyFrenchgirlnamedAdele.ThedistinguishedhousekeeperMrs.Fairfaxpresidesovertheestate.Jane’semployeratThornfieldisadark,impassionedmannamedRochester,withwhomJanefindsherselffallingsecretlyinlove.ShesavesRochesterfromafireonenight,whichheclaimswasstartedbyadrunkenservantnamedGracePoole.ButbecauseGracePoolecontinuestoworkatThornfield,Janeincluesthatshehasnotbeentoldtheentirestory.JanesinksintodespondencywhenRochesterbringshomeabeautifulbutviciouswomannamedBlancheIngram.JaneexpectsRochestertoproposetoBlanche.ButRochesterinsteadproposestoJane,whoacceptsalmostdisbelievingly.

AtFerndean,RochesterandJanerebuildtheirrelationshipandsoonmarry.Attheendofherstory,JanewritesthatshehasbeenmarriedfortenblissfulyearsandthatsheandRochesterenjoyperfectequalityintheirlifetogether.Shesaysthataftertwoyearsofblindness,Rochesterregainedsightinoneeyeandwasabletobeholdtheirfirstsonathisbirth.
