Thelargeststudyintonoiseinducedhearinglossinmusicianswaspublishedin2014.
ThreemillionGermanswereexamined,including2,227professionalmusicians.Scientistsfoundthatthemusicianswereaboutfourtimesaslikelytosufferthenoiseinducedhearinglosscomparedtothegeneralpopulation.Manystudiesintoclassicalmusicianshavealsofoundevidenceofsuchproblems.Onestudyfromthe1990sfoundthatviolinistsandviolistshavemorehearinglossintheirleftearcomparedtotheirrightear.Thislossofhearingiscausedbythemusician'sowninstrument,astheviolinisplacedunderthechinwiththeleftearalmosttouchingtheinstrument.Fivestudieshavefoundthatbetween37%and58%ofclassicalmusiciansexperiencehearingloss.Forrockandpopthenumbersaresimilar,withstudiesfindingthatunderhalfofmusicianssufferingfromhearingloss.
IntheUK,theControlofNoiseatWorkRegulationssetslimitsforexposuretonoise.Thelowestactionlevelis80decibelsonaverageoveraworkingday;itisaboutasloudasaheavilytraffickedstreet.Whenthisactionlevelisexceeded,employersmustprovideinformationandtrainingandshouldmakehearingprotectionavailable.Whentheupperactionlevelof85decibelsonaverageisexceeded,thenemployersmusttakeactiontoreducethenoiseandhearingprotectionbecomescompulsory.Whatcountsmostinassessingtherisktohearingistheaverageexposure.
Exposuretohighnoiselevelsoftencausestemporarydeafness—somethingthatmanypeoplehaveexperiencedaftergoingtoanightclub.Whilehearingusuallyrecoversafterafewhoursordays,repeatedloudexposureleadstopermanenthearingdamage.Initially,thisdamageisslightandunlikelytobenoticedbythelistener.Problemsonlybecomesignificantinmiddleagewhenthenoise-inducedhearinglosscombineswiththenaturallossofhearingduetoageing.Often,oneofthefirstsignsiswhensomeonefindsithardtopickoutaconversationinanoisypuborrestaurant.Unfortunately,oncethat'snoticed,it'stoolate.
Oneimmediatethreatistheloudinstrumentscloseby.Movingfurtherawayquietensthesound,butifthatisn'tpossible,thenotherapproachesareavailable.Oftenorchestras(管弦乐队)usescreenstoblocksoundfromtheloudestinstruments.Alternatively,thereare"musicians'earplugs".Thesedecreasesoundwithoutcompletelyblockingeverythingoutandareveryusefulinarehearsal(排练),butgetinthewayofbalancingthesoundinaconcert.Professionalorchestrasalsofocusonhowtheyschedulemusic,ensuringthatmusiciansareexposedtoamixtureofquietandloudpieces.Givenhowloudtheirinstrumentsare,drummersareparticularlyatrisk,butusingquieterpracticepadsandearplugswhentheyarenotperformingcanlessenpotentialhearinglosstosomeextent.Forrockandpopmusicians,usingin-earmonitorsratherthanloudspeakersalsohasthepotentialtoreducenoiseexposure,becausethesoundwithintheearcanbebettercontrolled.
