2.Buyold-fashionedoatsinsteadofinstant-cerealpackets.Ifyou'redebatingbetweenoatmealandcoldcereal,chooseoatmeal.Ithasfewercaloriesthanmostcoldcereals,and,unlikemostcoldcereals,oatmealishighinsugar-stabilizingsolublefiber.Infact,researchhasfoundthateatingonecupofoatmealfiveorsixtimesaweekcanreducetheriskofgettingtype2diabetesby39percent.Italsohelpslowercholesterol.Buttheinstantbreakfastpacketsusuallycontainaddedsugar,nottomentionsodium,whichcanraisebloodpressure.Apple-flavoredinstantoatmealfromapackethas229milligramsofsodium.Acupofrolledoatshasonly3milligramsofsodium—anditshearty,chewytexturejustcan'tbebeat.
3.Choosebreadwiththeword"whole"inthefirstingredient.Lookingatthebread'scolorwon'ttellyouifit'sreallywholegrain—youhavetoreadtheingredientslist.Breadsthatlist"enrichedwheatflour"astheprimaryingredienthavebeenstrippedofmostoftheirnutrients—infact,about11vitaminsandmineralsarelostintheprocess.Breadsthatareenrichedalsocontainaddedsugarandfat.
