TheimplicationofARoseforEmilyismany–fold.Firstofall,thisisastoryaboutthedeclineofthesouth,especially,theSouthernaristocraticclass,Inthisstory,Emily,broughtupinthataristocratictraditionbyherstrictfather,representstheoldvalues.Butwhentheyoungergenerationbecomesthebackboneandthespiritofthetown,herfamily’sprivilegesarechallenged.Secondly,thestorycanalsobereadasadramatizationoftheconflictbetweenthetwodifferentvaluesystemsandtwosocialorders,i.e.thenewandtheold,theNorthandtheSouth,representedrespectivelybyHomerandEmily.FromstubbornandeccentricEmilywefindhowthebackwardSouthstrugglestoresisttheprogressiveandmaterialisticcivilizationoftheNorth.Anotherreadingofthestoryshedslightontheclashbetweenthepresentandthepast,adilemmathemodernmanfeelswhenhelivesvirtuallyinmemory.Emilygetsusedtotheoldwayoflife,enjoyingallthosearistocraticadvantages.However,whentheoldvaluesaregraduallycastawaybythenewgeneration,shecannotadjustherselftothechangedsociety.Finallysheisinself-closureanddiesinmiseryastheprisonerofthepastgloryandavictimtotheconflictbetweenthepastandthepresent.
