Thereisnodenyingthefactthatkeepingpetsisahotlydebatedtopictoday.Somepeoplethinkkeepingpetsisagoodthingtodo.Theybelievethatpets,likecatsanddogs,canhelprelievethelonelinesssufferedbyseniorcitizensandothersocialmemberswhoareconfinedtotheirhomesforthisreasonorthat.Theyalsoarguethatkeepingpetshelpsmankindunderstandanimals’worldanddeveloppositivefeelingstowardthem.

Others,however,holdtheoppositeview.Theyregardkeepingpetsasauselessbutharmfulthingtodo.First,petscantransmitdiseases.Secondly,thenoisesanddungofpetsaresourcesofpollution.Lastbutnotleast,asmanyrarebirdsandanimalsarekeptaspets,theywillsurelybehuntedonalargescale,whichmeansathreattothebalanceoftheecosystem.

Weighingtheprosandconsofthesearguments,Iaminclinedtoagreewiththelatter.Anyway,wecanlessenourlonelinessandexpressourlovetowardanimalsinotherways.Anditismybeliefthatonlybyplacingmanandotherspeciesonanequalbasiscanweexpecttohavealivelyandcolorfulworld.

Awell-knownproverbgoesthat“wherethereisawill,thereisaway”,whichmeansthatonecanfindawaytosuccessaslongasheorshehasastrongwill.Withastrongwill,onecanfocusallhisenergyononepoint,whichmakeshissuccesspossible.Withoutastrongwill,however,onecanbeeasilydistractedfromhisgoalordiscouragedbysetbacks,whichleadstohisultimatefailure.

9.MoreStudentsPursueMasterDegrees

Itcanbeseenfromthechartthattherehavebeensharpincreasesinthenumberofstudentsattendinggraduateentranceexamsinacollegeinthepastdecades.Asthechartshows,theyear1996witnessedonly200studentstakingpartintheexams.In2001,thenumbernearlydoubled.In2006,farmorestudentspreparedthemselvesforgraduatestudies.

Anumberoffactorscouldaccountforthechangeinthechart,butthefollowingarethemostcriticalones.First,thankstothepolicyofreformandopening-up,thenation’seconomyhasbeendevelopingataconsiderablyhighspeedinthepastdecades.Therefore,thepeoplehavemoreextramoneyforeducation.Secondly,otherrelevantstatepoliciesandtheboomofhighereducationprovidestudentswithmoreopportunitiestopursuehigherdegrees.Lastbutnotleast,theincreasinglyfiercecompetitionforcescollegestudentstofurthertheirstudyinordertogainmoreedgeofcompetition.

Inaword,thischartisaperfectindicatorofChina’sfastexpandinghighereducation.Althoughmanyproblemshavearisenintheprocess,wehaveeveryreasontobelievethattheycanbesolvedinthenearfuturewitheffectivemeasurestaken.

10.StudyingAbroad:

HardshipsandRewards

TherecentyearshaveseenadramaticincreaseinthenumberofChinesestudyingabroad.Obviously,studyingabroadhasitsrewards.Inthefirstplace,astudentcanhaveaccesstoadvancedscienceandtechnologyaswellasdesirableworkingconditionswhichmightnotbeavailableathome.Inthesecondplace,hecanbeexposedtoentirelynewideasandtrends.Lastbutnotleast,bylivingandstudyinginaforeigncountry,onecanimprovehisforeignlanguagemuchfasterthanathome.

However,justaseverycoinhastwosides,studyingabroadmayalsoconfrontonewithaseriesofhardships.Foronething,learningaforeignlanguageisfarfromaneasythingatthebeginningformostpeople.Foranother,acompletelynewenvironmentwithdifferentcustomsandhabitsmayalsobeabarriertooverseasstudents,especiallytotheyoung.Anaddeddifficultylieswithfinance:

itcancostalottostudyabroad.
