Passage1
Oneofthestrangestfeaturesofmotherhoodisthatthevastmajorityofmothersprefertocradletheirbabiesintheleftarm.Whyshouldthisbe?
Theobviousexplanationisthatthemajorityofmothersarerighthandedandtheywishtokeeptheirrighthandedandtheywishtokeeptheirrighthandfree.Unfortunately,thisexplanationcannotapply,becauseleft-handedmothersalsofavortheirleftarmforholdingtheirbabies.Theprecisefiguresarc83percentforright-handedmothersand73percentforleft-handedmothers.
Themostlikelyexplanationisthatthemother'sheartisontheleftsideand,byholdingthebabyinherleftarm,sheisunconsciouslybringingherbabyclosertothesoundoftheheartbeat.Thisisthesoundthebabyheardwhenitwasinsidethemother'swombandwhichisthereforeanassociationwithpeace,comfortandsecurity.
Testswerecarriedoutinnurserieswheresomebabieswereplayedtherecordedsoundofahumanheartbeat,and,sureenough,wenttosleeptwiceasquicklyastheothers.Wealsoknowthatthesoundofmother'sheartisquiteaudibleinsidethewombandthattheunbornbabyhasawell-developedhearing.
Itisinterestingthatfathersshowlessofthisleft-sidebias(偏爱)thanmothers,suggestingthatthehumanfemaleisbetterprogrammedthanherpartnerforcarryingababy.Alternatively,shemayunconsciouslyadjustherholdingbehaviortomakebabyfellmoresecure.Somenewobservationsonourclosestanimals'relatives,thechimpanzeesandgorillas,haverevealedthattheytooshowastrongbiasforholdingtheirbabiesontheleftside.Theprecisefigureswere84percentforchimpanzeesand82percentforgorillas,remarkablyclosetothehumanpercentages.
Recentlyapossibleadditionalvalueincradlingbabiesontheleftsidehasbeensuggested.Ithasbeenpointedoutthat,because,thetwosidesofthebrainareconcernedwithdifferentaspectsofbehavior,itispossiblethatthemother,incradlingthebabytoherleft,isshowingthebabyher"bestside".Itisclaimedthattheemotionsareexpressedmorestronglyontheleftsideofthehumanfaceandthatshethereforegivesthebabyabetterchancetoreadheremotionalmoodchangesasitgazesupather.Furthermore,themother'slefteyeandeararemoretunedintoemotionalchangesinherbabythanherrighteyeandearwouldbe.Soinadditiontothebaby'sseeingthemoreexpressivepartsofitsmother,thereisfurtheradvantagethatthemotherisherselfmoresensitivetotheleft-heldbaby.Thismaysoundfar-fetched,butjustpossibly,itcouldprovideaslightextrabenefitforthosemothersdisplayingthestrangeone-sidedbiaswhencradlingtheirinfants.
Howdoesabiasoccur?
Dothemothershaveaninstinctivepreferenceforit,ordotheylearnitbytrialanderror,unconsciouslyadjustingthepositionofthebabiesuntilthebabiesarecalmer?
Thesurprisingansweristhatitseemstobethebabynotthemotherwhocontrolsthebias.Observationofnewborninfantswhentheywereonlyafewhoursoldrevealedthattheycomeintotheworldwithapre-programmedtendencytoturntheirheadtotheright.Ifthenewbornbabyisgentlyheldinadeadcentralpositionandthenreleased,itnaturallyswingstotherightfarmoreoftenthantotheleft.Thishappensinnearly70percentofbabies.Thismaybeonlyapartofexplanation,becausetheholdingbiasis80percentnot70percent,butitaddsafurtherintriguingchaptertothestory.
