Fossilsofthylacinesdatingfromaboutalmost12millionyearsagohave
beendugupatvariousplacesinVictoria,SouthAustniliaandWestern
Australia.TheywerewidespreadinAustralia7000yearsago,buthaveprobably
beenextinctonthecontinentfor2000years.Thisisbelievedtohebecauseof
theintroductionofdingoesaround8000yearsago.Becauseofdisease,thylacine
numbersmayhavebeendeclininginTasmaniaatthetimeofEuropeansettlement
200yearsago,butthedeclinewascertainlyacceleratedbythenewarrivals.
ThelastknownTasmanianTigerdiedinHobartZooin1936andtheanimalis
officiallydassiliedjisextinct.Technically,thismeansthatithasnotbeen
officiallysightedinthewildorcaptivityfor50years.However,thereare

"Theconsensusamongconservationistsisthat,usually,anyanimalwitha
populationbaseoflessthan1,000isheadedforextinctionwithin60years,”

Dr.DavidPemberton,curatorofzoologyattheTasmanianMuseumandArt
Gallery,whosePhDthesiswasonthethylacine,saysthatdespitescientific
thinkingthat500animalsarerequiredtosustainapopulation,theFlorida
pantherisdowntoadozenorsoanimalsand,whileitdoeshavesomeinbreeding
problems,isstilltickingalong.Mriltakeapuntandsaythat,ifwemanageto
findathylacineinthescrub,itmeansthatthereare50-plusanimalsout
there.
Afterall,animalscanbenotoriouslyelusive.Thestrangefishknownas
thecoelacanth,withits"proto-legs",wasthoughttohavediedoutalongwith
