firsttheGaels,whosedescendantsarethemodernScotsandIrish,someofwhomstillspeaktheGaeliclanguage;andsecondtheBritons,whogavetheirnametothewholeislandofBritain.ThesewerethepeoplewhomtheRomansconquered.TheRomansgavetheBritonsagooddealoftheircivilisation,buttheyneversettledinBritaininverylargenumbers,sotheBritishracesurviveduntiltheoverthrowoftheRomanEmpirebythe“barbarians”,i.e.thenumerousGermanictribeswhichoverranthewholeofWesternEurope.
