Asdisjointedasthetwoworldspresentedinthesubtitlemayappeartosome,thereisinrealityacloseandvitalconnectionbetweenthem.TherelationshipbetweenthetwobecomesapparentwhensomeofthemainfeaturesoftheSouthernBaptistfamilytreearetraced.
WeBaptistslooktotheScripturestojustifyourexistence,andthatisjustasitshouldbe.WeareapeopleoftheBook.TheBible,andtheBiblealone,isourauthority.WelooknofurtherthantheScripturestoseekdirectionforourfaithandpractice.Historyisnotourauthority.Nevertheless,historycanbeourassistantaswetrytolearnfromthebiblicalinsightsofthosewhohavegonebeforeus.
SouthernBaptistshavearichheritage,anditstretchesbackhundredsofyearsbeforeouractualemergenceasadenominationin1845.OurrootsextendallthewaybacktothefertilesoilofthesixteenthcenturyProtestantReformation.

ThenineteenthcenturyScottishtheologianWilliamCunninghamcalledtheProtestantReformation"thegreatestevent,orseriesofevents,thathasoccurredsincethecloseofthecanonofScripture".
(1)Itwas,quitesimply,agreatworkoftheSpiritofGod,arevivalofbiblicalChristianity.Withoutadoubt,theReformationstandsasthemostsignificantrevivalsinceApostolictimes.
GeneralCharacteristicsoftheReformation
BeforeanobscuremonknamedMartinLuthernailedninety-fivethesestothechurchdooratWittenburgonOctober31,1517,theChurchofChristhadbeenlivinginspirituallydarktimes.TheBiblehadbeenkeptfromthecommonpeople.TheRomanCatholicChurchhadlargelypervertedthegospelofGod'sgracebyteachingthatsalvationcomesfromthehandsoftheprieststhroughtheadministrationofthesacramentsinresponsetohumanworksandmerit.
WiththedawningoftheReformationtheseperversionsofthegospelwereexposed,andarenewalofbiblicalChristianityemerged.ThoughthestoryofhowthisawakeningcameandspreadacrossEuropeandGreatBritainisafascinatingone,wemustlimitourselvesinthispamphlettoanoverviewofwhathappenedandleavethequestionof"how"ithappenedtoalaterstudy.
WiththerediscoveryoftheBibleinthesixteenthcenturycameareawakeningtoGod'swayofsalvationbygracealonethroughfaithaloneinChristalone.Infact,thatlittlewordaloneprovidesarealkeytounderstandingthemainthemesoftheReformation.InLatinthewordissolaanditwasusedinfivephrasesthatcapturetheessenceofReformationaltheology.
FiveReformationThemes
1.SolaScriptura:
ScriptureAlone
TheReformerstaughtthattheScripturealoneisthefinalauthorityforwhatwemustbelieveandhowwemustlive.Thisviewsoundscommonplacetoustoday,butitwasradicalinthesixteenthcentury.ForcenturiestheRomanCatholicChurchhadasserteditsauthorityoveragainstthatoftheBible.TheauthorityofthePope,tradition,andcouncilswereallregardedasauthoritiesalongwiththeBible.Againstthatview,theReformersassertedsolaScriptura:
theBible,andtheBiblealone,isouronlyinfalliblesourceofauthorityforfaithandpractice.
2.SolaGratia:
GraceAlone
HowcanasinfulmanbecomerightwithaholyGod?
Thatisalwaysthemostimportantreligiousquestion.ItwasthequestionthatplaguedLuther'sconscienceandnearlydrovehiminsanebeforehewasconverted.Romehaddevelopedaveryelaboratesysteminresponsetothatquestion.Rome'sanswerinvolvedhumanworksandmerit--asinnermustperformsufficientlywellbeforeGodifhewouldreceivetheblessingofsalvation.
ButthroughthestudyoftheScripturestheReformersrediscoveredthatsalvationisthegraciousgiftofGod.Mancontributesnothingtoit.Itisonlybythesheer,absolutegraceofGod.Biblewordslikeelectionandpredestination,whichmagnifythegraceofGodinsalvation,wererediscovered,havingbeenlargelyforgottenordrainedoftheirmeaningbythemainstreamofmedievalRomanCatholicteachers.

3.SolaFide:
FaithAlone
TheReformerstaughtthatthemeanswherebyasinnerisgraciouslyjustifiedbeforeGodisfaith--notfaithplusmeritorfaithplusworks--butfaithalone.LutherdiscoveredthattheBibleteachesthatthesinnermustplacehistrustinJesusChristinordertogainarightstandingbeforeGod.ThroughfaithalonetherighteousnessofJesusChristisimputedtotheonewhobelieves.
4.SoloChristo:
ChristAlone
TheReformationrejectedRome'srequirementthatcommonchurchmembersputtheirfaithimplicitlyinthechurch'steachings.Instead,theyargued,JesusChristaloneistheproperobjectoffaith.Heistobetrustedforsalvation--notpriests,popes,councils,ortraditions.
