Formorethanfortyyears,artistsChristoandJeanne-Claudehavebeenchallengingthepublic’sideaofwhatartcanbe.Workingtogether,theycreatepiecesknownas“installationart”onagiantscale.Inthesepiecestheywrapentirebridgesorbuildingsinfabric,orstretchanylonfenceformilesalongcountryfields.These“gentledisturbances”,astheartistscallthem,temporarilychangeplacesthatweoftentakeforgrantedandinspirepeopletoseetheirworldanew.
Theprojectthatmadethemmostfamous,however,wasinNewYorkCity.InFebruary2005,theydesignedandorganizedtheinstallationof7,500tallblackmetagates-hungwithorange-coloredfabricalong23milesofwalkwaysinCentralPark.Forthetwoweeksthatthegateswereup,theparkwasfilledwiththousandsofpeople.BothNewYorkersandvisitorsfromoutoftownwantedtoseethistransformationofthepark.Justtokeepgoingthroughthegates,peoplewalkedtocornersoftheparkwheretheyhadneverbeenbefore.ObservedfromoneofNewYorkCity’sskyscrapers,thegateslookedlikeariverofbrightcolorflowingthroughthepark.TheycreatedafeelingofjoyfulcelebrationandbroughtNewYorkerstogether.
TheinspirationforTheGates,astheinstallationwasinformallycalled,camefromtheinitial1854designforCentralPark.Theoriginaldesignershadplannedforgatesalongthepark’ssurroundingwalls,butthosegateswereneverbuilt.ChristoandJeanne-ClaudefocusedonthefactthatNewYorkerslovewalking,andthatCentralParkisoneoftheirfavoriteplacesforwalkingandformeeting.Thegatestructuresweredesignedtomirrorthegridofthecitystreetsnearthepark.Tallandnarrow,theyseemedtoinvitepeopletowalkthroughthem.Thefabricwaschosencarefullyandcutinsuchawaythatitcouldswingfreelyinthewindandseemtofollowthecurvingpathsonwhichthegateswerebuilt.
ChristoandJeanne-ClaudefirstproposedtheideaforTheGatestwenty-sixyearsearlier,butNewYorkofficialsatthattimedidnotwelcometheproject.Inthecourseoftryingtogetpermissionfromthecityofficesinchargeofthepark,theartistsreceivedavastcollectionofdocuments.Nomatterhowlongandfrustratingitwas,gettingpermissionwaspartoftheprocessofcreatingTheGates.ChristoandJeanne-Clauderecognizethattheirartwork,inthiscase,wasnotmadeaboutCentralPark;itwasmadeoutofCentralPark.
Inspiteofallthedelaysandobjections,theartistspersisted.TheyreceivedbuildingpermitsforTheGatesin2003,byorderofMayorMichaelBloomberg.Severalmoreyearswererequiredforthedesignandtheconstructionofthe7,500structureswiththeirpiecesoforangefabric.Andfinally,onFebruary13,2005,TheGateswereopen.
