ThetopicI'dliketodealwiththismorningiswhatmakesagoodlanguagelearner.Thisisaneternalproblem,andonetowhichthere'snorealsolution.Iwouldhoweverlikeyoutothinkaboutthesituationoflearnersoutsidetheclassroombecauseinmanywaysitwouldbetruetosaythattherearemorepeopleintheworldwhospeakaforeignlanguageorasecondlanguagewhodidn'tlearnitinaclassroomthantherearewhodidandIthinkthisawarenessofthesuccessofout-of-classroomlearningprovidesuswithakeytohowin-classroomlearningcanbesuccessful.
Letuslookthenatthecharacteristicsofagoodlanguagelearner.Ithinkmotivationiscertainlygoingtobeveryhighonourlist.Obviouslytherearedifferentkindsofmotivation;thereiswhatwecallinstrumentalmotivation,thisisthekindofmotivationwhichintheorypersuadesaschoolpupiltolearnalanguageinordertopassanexamination—it'sexternalmotivation,somethingwhichisimposedonthelearner.Theoppositeofthisisintegrativemotivation,thekindofmotivationwhichgetsanimmigrantinacountryorsomeonewho'smarriedtoaspeakerofanotherlanguagetomasterthetonguemuchmorerapidlythansomeonelearninginaclassroom.Arguablymostpeoplepossessmixedmotivationalthoughitwouldappearfromresearchthatintegrativemotivationdoesgivemuchbetterresults,certainlyasfarasspeedoflearninggoes.

—extrovertstolearnaforeignlanguage,butsomeonewhohastheconfidencetomakemistakesisalwaysgoingtolearnmuchmorequicklythansomeonewhoisafraidtoexperiment.
Intelligenceisn'tafactor,Ifeel,inlanguagelearning—Iwouldprefertousethetermlearningskills.Learningskillsarethoseabilitieswhichmakeonepersonprogressatamuchfasterspeedthantheothers;theyincludehavingagoodear,efficientrevision,beingabletomonitoryourownspeech,suitableorganizationoflearninggenerally.
However,ifwegobacktoourstartingpoint,whichwasthegreat,themuchgreaternumberofspeakersoflanguageswhohavelearntoutsideclassroomsIthinkitgivesusthekeytowhatIbelieveisthemostimportantfactor,andthat'sindependence.Alearnerwhofreeshimorherselffromthetyrannyoftheteacherandtheclassroomandwhomakesuseoftwenty-fourhoursadayforlearning,who,inaword,acceptsresponsibilityforlearning,isalwaysgoingtobenotjustagoodlanguagelearnerbutthebest.Conversely,someonewhowon'tacceptthisresponsibilityisalwaysgoingtoremainatwhatwecallaplateau—they'vefailedtomakeprogressandblametheirteachers.Inrealityitisthemselvesthattheyshouldblame.

AsfarasI'mconcerned,IdotendtojudgepeopleImeetbytheiraccents.Idon'tmeanthatI'masortofsnob,andonlylikepeoplewithposhaccents,butIneverfeelcomfortablewithanewpersonuntilI'vebeenabletoplacethemfromthewaytheyspeak.Ifit'sanEnglishperson,IfeelmuchmoreateaseifIcansay"Ah,hecomesfromLiverpool",or"He'sprobablybeentopublicschool".IsupposethenIknowwhattotalkaboutandwhattoexpectfromtheotherperson.Thesameistrueofforeigners.Personally,Ipreferaforeignertospeakwitharecognizableforeignaccent,sothatIknowthatI'mtalkingtoaFrenchman,aGhanaian,aPole,andsoon.Soforme,itseemsabitpointlessforforeignerstotrydesperatelyhardtogetridoftheirnationalaccentandtrytospeakBBCEnglish.IfsomeoneisclearlyFrench,Iknowthere'snopointintalkingaboutcricketormakingjokesabouttheIrish.Andfrankly,Ithinkitevensoundsmoreattractive.Ican'treallyexplainwhy,butifapersonhasaforeignaccent,theyseemtobemoreinteresting,eveniftheyaresayingthemostordinarythings.

Mindyou,thereisalimittointelligibility.Iftheaccentissostrongthatyouhaveastruggletounderstandwhattheyaresaying,thenthatgetsinthewayoftheconversation,andtheflowisbrokenwhileyoutrytosortoutthesoundsintomeaningfulbits.Idon'tmeananaccentasstrongasthat.I'mtalkingaboutthekindofaccentwhereyoucantellimmediatelywhichcountrythepersoncomesfrom,butwherethey'vegotenoughEnglishtocarryonagoodconversationwithoutsearchingforwords,ormessingupthegrammarsothatyoulosethethread.Isupposeit'sthekindofaccentmostforeignershave,really.Tobehonest,it'sonlyaveryfewwhohavesuchagoodearthattheyproducemoreorlessgenuineBritishEnglish,andeventhenitcanbequiteamusingbecausetheymayhavepickedupaclearlyregionalaccent,orevenaveryupper-classaccentwhichdoesn'tfitinwiththeircharacteratall.ButmostforeignerswholearnEnglisharedesperatelykeentogetridoftheirforeignaccentsandwastealotoftimetryingtodoso.
