FromthetimeIstartedgoingthereinthethirdgrade,IwastheonlydeafchildatBlueCreekElementarySchoolinthesmall,quiettownofLatham,NewYork.Fromalmostthefirstdaythere,theotherkidsmadefunofmeandcalledmenamesmainlybecauseofmyhearingaidandthewayItalked.
Iworriedthroughoutelementaryschoolbecause,inadditiontotheproblemsof“fittingin”withtheotherstudents,Ialsostruggledwithmostofmyschoolwork.
AlthoughIseemedoutgoing,myself-esteemwasquitelow.Isawmyselfasanuglykidwearingaweird-lookingboxaroundhisneckwhowasn’tevensmartenoughtokeepupwiththeotherkids.
