ijustreceivedaverygraciouscallfromsenatormccain.hefoughtlongandhardinthiscampaign,andhesfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountryheloves.hehasenduredsacrificesforamericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagine,andwearebetterofffortheservicerenderedbythisbraveandselflessleader.icongratulatehimandgovernorpalinforalltheyhaveachieved,andilookforwardtoworkingwiththemtorenewthisnationspromiseinthemonthsahead.
iwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney,amanwhocampaignedfromhisheartandspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofscrantonandrodewithonthattrainhometodelaware,thevicepresident-electoftheunitedstates,joebiden.

tomycampaignmanagerdavidplouffe,mychiefstrategistdavidaxelrod,andthebestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpolitics-youmadethishappen,andiamforevergratefulforwhatyouvesacrificedtogetitdone.

iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington-itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthefrontporchesofcharleston.
itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhadtogivefivedollarsandtendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.itgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathy;wholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep;fromthenot-so-youngpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockonthedoorsofperfectstrangers;fromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteered,andorganized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agovernmentofthepeople,bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromthisearth.thisisyourvictory.
iknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelectionandiknowyoudidntdoitforme.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.forevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetime-twowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisisinacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswakingupinthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesforus.
therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleepandwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgage,orpaytheirdoctorsbills,orsaveenoughforcollege.thereisnewenergytoharnessandnewjobstobecreated;newschoolstobuildandthreatstomeetandalliancestorepair.
theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgetthereinoneyearorevenoneterm,butamerica-ihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniamtonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyou-weasapeoplewillgetthere.
therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyimakeaspresident,andweknowthatgovernmentcantsolveeveryproblem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.andaboveall,iwillaskyoujoinintheworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafortwo-hundredandtwenty-oneyears-blockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycallousedhand.
whatbegantwenty-onemonthsagointhedepthsofwintermustnotendonthisautumnnight.thisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseek-itisonlythechanceforustomakethatchange.andthatcannothappenifwegobacktothewaythingswere.itcannothappenwithoutyou.
soletussummonanewspiritofpatriotism;ofserviceandresponsibilitywhereeachofusresolvestopitchinandworkharderandlookafternotonlyourselves,buteachother.letusrememberthatifthisfinancialcrisistaughtusanything,itsthatwecannothaveathrivingwallstreetwhilemainstreetsuffers-inthiscountry,weriseorfallasonenation;asonepeople.
letusresistthetemptationtofallbackonthesamepartisanshipandpettinessandimmaturitythathaspoisonedourpoliticsforsolong.letusrememberthatitwasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanneroftherepublicanpartytothewhitehouse-apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-reliance,individualliberty,andnationalunity.thosearevaluesweallshare,andwhilethedemocraticpartyhaswonagreatvictorytonight,wedosowithameasureofhumilityanddeterminationtohealthe
dividesthathaveheldbackourprogress.aslincolnsaidtoanationfarmoredividedthanours,wearenotenemies,butfriends...thoughpassionmayhavestraineditmustnotbreakourbondsofaffection.andtothoseamericanswhosesupportihaveyettoearn-imaynothavewonyourvote,butihearyourvoices,ineedyourhelp,andiwillbeyourpresidenttoo.
