Abstract:
ThisthesisisaboutLawrence’sviewonhumanityinhismostcontroversialnovelLadyChatterley’sLover.OncethisnovelwasconsideredaspornographybecauseLawrence’sfranktreatmentofsexandthedescriptionoftherelationshipbetweenthesexes.Thepaperistoprovehisviewonhumanityinhisnovelfromthreeaspects:
ananalysisofthesettingofthenovel;ananalysisofthecharacters;andananalysisofthemaleandfemalerelationship.ThroughLadyChatterley’sLover,Lawrencecriticizedthesocietywhichwastwistedbytheindustrialcivilizationandherecalledthehumanityinthatsociety.

本论文通过劳伦斯最具争议的小说《查泰莱夫人的情人》来分析劳伦斯的人性观。
因劳伦斯开诚布公的谈论性爱以及对两性关系的描写,此小说曾被视为色情书刊。
本论文从以下三个方面来证明劳伦斯的人性观:
对小说中的环境进行分析;对人物角色的分析;以及对小说中的两性关系进行分析。
论文通过这三方面表达劳伦斯对被工业文明扭曲的社会的看法。
他通过对《查泰莱夫人的情人》来呼唤人性的回归。

TheFirstWorldWarwasagreatturningpointinthewesternhistory.ThewarleftmanywiththesorrowfulfeelingthatWesterncivilizationhadlostitsvitalityandwascaughtinarhythmofbreakingdownanddisintegration.Duringthetransitionfrom19thto20thcentury,manygreatchangestookplaceinEnglandaswell.Englandpresentedakindofdistortedsituation.AftertheFirstWorldWarandthedevelopmentofeconomy,widespreaddemandforsocialreformbecameverypopular,especiallyinindustry.Thisindustrialsocietymadeeverythingmechanized.Therelationshipsamongpeoplebecameindifferentandcold.Machineswerehereandthere.Thosefactorsinfluencedliterature.Manyexcellentnovelistsbegantowriteindustrialnovels,suchasJamesThomsonNight,ThomasHardyandD.H.Lawrence.Atthattime,theoldagriculturalEnglandlivedinanuneasytrucewiththeearlyphaseofadvancingindustrialization.Lawrence,togetherwithotheryoungintellectuals,intenselydissatisfiedwiththedecayingspiritofEnglandandthecollapseofthetraditionalvaluesofEuropeancivilization.Hesawtheincreasingdecadenceandcorruptionofcivilizationandwasawareoftheverydangeroftheextinctionofthehumanity.
B.IntroductiontoLawrenceandhisworks
DavidHerbertLawrencewasadistinguishednovelistandreviewerinEnglandintheearly20thcentury.Duringhislifetime,hewasacontroversialfigurebecauseofhisfranktreatmentofsexandhisoutspokenfortherelationshipbetweenthesexes.HewrotemanyfamousworkssuchasSonsandlovers,WomeninLove,TheRainbow,andthemostcontroversialwork—LadyChatterley'sLover.
InEngland,somemagazineconsideredLadyChatterley'sLoveras“Thesignofevil”orpornography.However,aftermanyyears,Lawrenceandhisworkswereknowngradually,andhisviewsonsocialproblemswereaccepted.SomepeoplethoughtLadyChatterley'sLoverwasnotjustanovelwhichdescribedsexonly,butagreatworkwhichexpressedakindofattitudetowardthesociety.In1920s,Englandwasunderthewayofbeingindustrialized.Thedevelopmentofindustrydestroyedthehumanity.Lawrenceexpressedhisviewsaboutthiskindofconditioninthisnovel.Herecalledthehumanitybyanaturalway—sex.

NomatterinthewesternworldorinChina,therearemanyresearchesonLawrence'sworks,especiallyhisworkLadyChatterley'sLover.Inthisnovel,thedescriptionofsexevokesmuchcontroversy.

In1929,theauthorLawrenceevaluatedhisbookLadyChatterley'sLover,“...youknowthisbookwasnotimmoralactually.Iamalwaysdevotingmyselftogettingagoalthatmakingsexrelationbecomereasonableandvaluable,notashamed.Inthisnovel,Iamthepeoplewhowalkfarthest.Forme,itlikesanakedmyself:
beautiful,tenderanddelicate”(ZhuBo515).
Latter,manyfamouspeoplemadecommentsonthisnovel,ZhuBo(6)quotedthecommentofafamousreviewernamedWalterAlamonthenovel“Ononehand,thisnovelisanattackfortheevilsideofindustrysocietyandindustrializationinLawrence’sopinion;Ontheotherhand,justasIsaid,theyrelatedwitheachother—itisaseriousdiscussionaboutthesexrelation.Lawrenceconsideredthosetwothingsasathingwhichhastwoaspects”.
SomepeoplethoughtthatLawrence'sLadyChatterley'sLoverdescribedanewmarriageconceptionbetweenmanandwoman.RichardHugooncesaid,“Thisbookduedwithakindofdifficultanddistressedplightforhumanbeings.Asweallknowitexiststhiskindofplight:
Amarriagestrayingintoawrongpath,andamarriagewaswrongfromtheverybeginning.Lawrencedidnotsaythattheygotalongwellwitheachother,soitdeniedtheproblem:

AprofessorofLondonUniversity,FrancesGamiaonceevaluatedLadyChatterley'sLover,hesaid,“AsfarasIknowthisistheonlyonebookthatduedwithsexrelationwithsolemnattitude.Forthemostofyoungpeoplewhoareinterestedinthisissue,itcanbringakindofsincereandseriousattitudetowardsextothem”(Han312).
Literaturesareanartisticmeansforwriterstoexpresstheirobservationsofandviewsontheworld.D.H.Lawrenceisagiftedwriterwhoseworksshowthetruefeaturesofhumanlife—theinstinctualdesire,anddescribevividlyallhumanfeelingsandexperiences,suchastheirstruggles,pains,crisesandenjoyment.Lawrencefindsoutthedecisiveeffectofhealthy,naturelovepsychologyuponthelifeintegrityandpersonalitysoundnessofaperson.InDerekBritton’sbookLadyChatterley,ThemakingoftheNovel,AnaisNinsaid:
“WhatmakesLadyChatterley'sLoversoremarkablycompleteasalovestoryisthatthereareconsistentlydoublepainsofview,andeverymomentoftherelationshiprevealsthewoman’sfeelingaswellastheman’s,andthewoman’swiththemostdelicateandsubtleacuteness”(Britton192).

InChina,asearlyas1930s,manyscholarsintroducedandtranslatedthisnovelintoChina.
Amongthem,afamousChinesewriterandscholarLinYutangandYuDafuweremostrepresentative.Thearticle“OnLawrence’snovelLadyChatterley'sLover”byYuDafuin1934praisedLawrence’sexquisitepsychologicaldescriptionunderthesocialandnaturalbackground(Sun199).
SomewriterswouldliketocompareLadyChatterley'sLovertotheChinesenovelThePlum,LinYutangsaid,"ThePlumdescribedthesexualintercoursejustassexualintercourse;Onthecontrary,Lawrencedescribedittoanalyzethesoulofthepeople.ForLawrence,sexishealthy,andnice,notguiltyandashamed.Thisisanadult’scommonbehavior,feelingashamedisguilty,actually”(Sun120).
Someonethoughtthat“LadyChatterley'sLovergivesamainlyfemale-centereddescriptionofthenatural,beautiful,reasonableandsacredsex,highlightsthevitalityoftheunifiedsoulandflesh,andlifeandpassion,andthusreflectstheauthor'shumanistspiritinhisconceptionofsexandaestheticismtendencyinhisdescriptionofsex”(Huang150).
ZhuWeihong(96)thoughtthatfromtheLadyChatterley'sLover,Lawrenceworshipedthemale’sbody.Ononehand,Lawrencewaseagertobehealthyandstrongbecauseallhislifehewasveryweak;ontheotherhand,hehadhisspecialviewonsexrelationshipbetweenmanandwoman.
III.ThemesofLadyChatterley’sLoverandLawrence’sViewonHumanity
AftertheWorldWarI,HeroineConnieandherparalyzedhusbandCliffordreturntotheirhouseWragbyinthemidlandofEngland.Therethelifelesslivingpusheshertothearmsofthegamekeeperinthewoods,andbothofthemgetrenewedlifethroughsexualregeneration.Lawrencethinksthatnatureendowsmanwiththenatureattributeandnatureisthecircumstanceofman’sactivities.Butwhatismoreimportantisthatnaturehasamagicpowertoawakenman’sinstinct.Lawrencepreachesaphilosophyagainstmodernlife-style.Themodernlife,ashesawit,istooself-consciousandlacktendernessandfeeling.Themodernindustrializationandmechanicalcivilizationsuppressman’sinstinctandmakepeopleunhappy.Lawrenceexpresseshisviewonhumanityinthisnovelbydepictingthedifferentsettingsandcharactersvividlyandalsothedifferentrelationshipsbetweenthethreemaincharacters.
