1.MentalHealth
Ithasalwaysbeeneasiertodefinementalillnessesthantodefinementalhealth.IntheunitedStatestheAmericanPsychiatricAssociationhastraditionallybeentheorganizationtodefinementaldisorders(beginningasearlyas1917whenitwasknownasTheAssociationofMedicalSuperintendentsofAmericanInstitutionsoftheInsane).Morerecentlymanyhaverecognizedthatmentalhealthismorethantheabsenceofmentalillness.Eventhoughmanyofusdon’tsufferfromadiagnosablementaldisorder,itisclearthatsomeofusarementallyhealthierthanothers.Thestudyofthecharacteristicsthatmakeupmentalhealthhasbeencalled“positivepsychology“.herearesomeoftheideasthathavebeenputforwardascharacteristicsofmentalhealth:
Theabilitytoenjoylife:
Theabilitytoenjoylifeisessentialtogoodmentalhealth.JamesTaylorwrotethat“Thesecretoflifeisenjoyingthepassingoftime.Anyfoolcandoit.Thereisnothingtoit.”Thepracticeofmindfulnessmeditationisonewaytocultivatetheabilitytoenjoythepresent.We,ofcourse,needtoplanforthefutureattimes;andwealsoneedtolearnfromthepast.Toooftenwemakeourselvesmiserableinthepresentbyworryingaboutthefuture.
Resilience(恢复力):
Theabilitytobouncebackadversityhasbeenreferredtoas“resilience”.Ithasbeenlongknownthatsomepeoplehandlestressbetterthanothers.WhyaresomeVietnamcombatveteranshandicappedforlife,whileothersbecomeUnitedStatessenators?
Whydosomeadultsraiseinalcoholicfamiliesdowell,whileothershaverepeatedproblemsinlife?
Thecharacteristicof“resilience”issharedbythosewhocopewellwithstress.
Balance:
Balanceinlifeseemstoresultingreatermentalhealth.Weallneedtobalancetimespentsociallywithtimespentsociallywithtimespentalone,forexample.Thosewhospendalloftheirtimealonemaygetlabeledas“loners“,andtheymaylosemanyoftheirsocialskills.Extremesocialisolationmayevenresultinasplitwithreality.Thosewhoignoretheneedforsomesolitarytimesalsorisksuchasplit.Balancingthesetwoneedsseemstobethekey---althoughweallbalancethesedifferently.Otherareaswherebalanceseemstobeimportantincludethebalancebetweenrestandexercise,andeventhebalancebetweentimespentindoorsandtimespentoutdoors.

Weallknowpeoplewhoholdveryrigidopinions.Noamountofdiscussioncanchangetheirviews.Suchpeopleoftensetthemselvesupforaddedstressbytherigidexpectationthattheyhold.Workingonmakingourexpectationsmoreflexiblecanimproveourmentalhealth.Emotionalflexibilitymaybejustasimportantascognitiveflexibility.Mentallyhealthypeopleexperiencearangeofemotionsandallowthemselvestoexpressthesefeelings.Somepeopleshutoffcertainfeelings,findingthemtobeunacceptable.Thisemotionalrigiditymayresultinothermentalhealthproblems.
Self-actualization:
Whathavewemadeofthegiftsthatwehavebeengiven?
Weallknowpeoplewhohavesurpassedtheirpotentialandotherswhoseemtohavesquanderedtheirgifts.Wefirstneedtorecognizeourgifts,ofcourse,andtheprocessofrecognitionispartofthepathtowardself—actualization.Mentallyhealthypersonsarepersonswhoareintheprocessofactualizingtheirpotential.
Thesearejustafewoftheconceptsthatimportantinattemptingtodefinementalhealth.Theabilitytoformhealthyrelationshipswithothersisalsoimportant.Adultandadolescentmentalhealthyrelationshipswithothersisalsoimportant.Adultandadolescentmentalhealthyalsoincludestheconceptsofself—esteemandhealthysexuality.Howwedealwithlossanddeathisalsoanimportantelementofmentalhealth.
2.Stress
Whatisstress?
TheHealthandSafetyExecutivedefinestressas“theadversereactionpeoplehavetoexcessivepressureorothertypesofdemandsplacedonthem“.Pressureispartandparcelofallworkandhelpstokeepusmotivated.Butexcessivepressurecanleadtostresswhichunderminesperformance,whichiscostlytoemployersandcanmakepeopleill.
Somestresscanbepositiveandresearchsuggeststhatamoderatelevelofstressmakesusperformbetter.Italsomakesusmorealertandcanhelpusinchallengingsituations.Stressfulsituationscanalsobeexhilaratingandsomepeopleactuallythriveontheexcitementthatcomeswithdangeroussportsorotherhigh-riskactivities.
However,stressisonlyhealthyasashort—livedresponse.Excessiveorprolongedstresscanleadtoillnessandphysicalandemotionalexhaustion.Researchhasshownthataround12millionadultsseetheirGP`swithmentalhealthproblemseachyear.Mostofthesesufferfromanxietyanddepression,muchofitstress—related.
Mentalillnessesaffect1in4peopleatsomepointduringtheirlives.Ithasbeenreferredtoasthe20thcenturydisease.Intoday’sbusyandstressfullifestyle,peopleoftenfeel“blue“,anxiousandstressout.Manyfindreliefindrugs,suchasProzacandValium(安定)orresorttoalcohol.
1.DefinitionofEntertainment
Entertainmentisageneraltermforpeopletocatchthefullmeaning.Itcanrefertosomethingthatamuses,pleases,ordiverts,especiallyaperformanceorshow.Peoplecanturntoentertainmentforrelaxation,amusement,pleasure,etc.Entertainmentplaysanimportantpartinpeoplesdailylifeanditaddcolortopeople’life.
2.TVNetworksintheUnitedStates
