Therearemanyargumentsforandagainsttheinterviewasaselectionprocedure.Themainargumentagainstitisthatitresultsinawhollysubjectivedecision.Asoftenasnot,emplyersdonotchoosethebestcandidate,theychoosethecandidatewhomakesagoodfirstimpressiononthem.Someemployers,ofcourse,replytothisargumentbysayingthattheyhavebecomesoexperiencedininterviewingstaffthattheyareabletomakeasoundassessmentofeachcandidate’slikelyperformance. Themainargumentinfavouroftheinterview—anditis,perhaps,agoodargument—isthatanemployerisconcernednotonlywithacandidate’sability,butwiththesuitabilityofhisorherpersonalityfortheparticularworksituation.Manyemployers,forexample,willoverlookoccasionalinefficienciesfromtheirsecretaryprovidedshehasapleasantpersonality.
