Everettandhisteamthendevelopeda“cost-to-goestimator”algorithmforchoosingapathofmaximumefficiency(andthusminimum“cost”).Thisalgorithmcreatedasecondmap,wheredarkerlocationsarefartherfromthegoal,andlighterlocationsarecloser.Aroadorsidewalkmightbedarker,whileadrivewaywouldbelighterandlighterthecloseritgetstothefrontdoor.Thefrontdoor-thedestination--isthelightest.Thiscost-to-goestimatormaphelpsarobotmakeinformeddecisionsonthefly.
