ThisclausecapturestheS1interfaceprinciplesandcharacteristics.
4.1E-UTRANarchitecture
TheE-UTRANislayeredintoaRadioNetworkLayer(RNL)andaTransportNetworkLayer(TNL).TheE-UTRANarchitecture,i.e.theE-UTRANlogicalnodesandinterfacesbetweenthem,aredefinedaspartoftheRNL.
TheE-UTRANarchitectureconsistsofasetofeNBsconnectedtotheEPCthroughtheS1interface.TheoverallLTEarchitectureandE-UTRANarchitecturearedescribedin3GPP TS36.401[2].ThissubclausespecifiesonlythearchitectureoftheS1interface,andshallnotconstrainthenetworkarchitectureofeithercoreorradioaccessnetworks.
TheS1interfaceisspecifiedattheboundarybetweentheEPCandtheE-UTRAN.Figure4.1depictsthelogicaldivisionoftheS1interface.FromtheS1perspective,theE-UTRANaccesspointisaneNB,andtheEPCaccesspointiseitherthecontrolplaneMMElogicalnodeortheuserplaneS-GWlogicalnode.TwotypesofS1interfacesarethusdefinedattheboundarydependingontheEPCaccesspoint:
