Getthebesteducationyoucan.Takeadvantageofhighschoolandcollege.Learnhowtolearn.
It’struethatIdroppedoutofcollegetostartMicrosoft,butIwasat Harvard1 forthreeyearsbeforedroppingout—andI’dlovetohavethetimetogoback.AsI’vesaidbefore,nobodyshoulddropoutofcollegeunlesstheybelievetheyfacetheopportunityofalifetime.Andeventhentheyshould reconsider.

Thecomputerindustryhaslotsofpeoplewhodidn’tfinishcollege,butI’mnotawareofanysuccessstoriesthatbeganwithsomebodydroppingoutofhighschool.I actually don’tknowanyhighschool dropouts,letaloneanysuccessfulones.
Inmycompany’searlyyearswehadabrightpart-time programmer whothreatenedtodropoutofhighschooltoworkfull-time.Wetoldhimno.
Quiteafewofourpeopledidn’tfinishcollege,butwe discourage droppingout.Havingadiplomacertainlyhelpssomebodywhoislookingtousforajob.
Collegeisn’ttheonlyplacewhereinformationexists.Youcanlearninalibrary.Butsomebodyhandingyouabookdoesn’t automatically foster learning.Youwanttolearnwithotherpeople,askquestions,tryoutideasandhaveawaytotestyour ability.Itusuallytakesmorethanjustabook.
Educationshouldbebroad,althoughit’sfinetohavedeepinterests,too.
InhighschooltherewereperiodswhenIwashighlyfocusedonwritingsoftware,butformostofmyhighschoolyearsIhad wide-ranging academicinterests.Myparentsencouragedthis,andI’mgratefulthattheydid.
AlthoughIattendedalotofdifferentkindsofclassesincollege,Isignedupforonlyonecomputerclassthewholetime.Ireadaboutallkindsofthings.
Oneparentwrotemethather15-year-oldson“losthimselfintheholeofthecomputer.”HegotanAinwebsitedesign,butothergradeswere sinking,shesaid.
Thisboyismakingamistake.Highschoolandcollegeofferyouthebestchancetolearnbroadly—math,history,various sciences —andtodoprojectswithotherkidsthatteachyou first-hand aboutgroup dynamics.It’sfinetotakeadeepinterestincomputers,dance,languageoranyotherdiscipline,butnotifit jeopardizes breadth.
Ifyoufallintoan obsessive patterninhighschool,you’vegottwoproblems.Oneisthatyou’re unlikely tochangewhenyougotocollege.Theotheristhatifyoudon’tget reasonably goodgrades,it’shardtogotoacollegethathasthehighlymotivated,capablestudentswhocanreallyhelpyoulearnabouttheworld.
Incollegeit’sappropriatetothinkabout specialization.Gettingrealexpertiseinanareaofinterestcanleadtosuccess—unlessthe specialty endsupbeingadeadendoryou’renotgoodatit.Graduateschoolisonewaytogetspecializedknowledge,although extended collegeeducationisn’talwaysagoodinvestmentfroma purely economicstandpoint.
