Nihao.ItistrulyapleasuretobehereattheNumberSevenSchool.Thankyousomuchforyourwarmwelcome.
Now,beforeIgetstarted,onbehalfofmyselfandmyhusband,IwanttosaythatourheartsgoouttoallthosewithlovedonesonMalaysiaAirlinesFlight370.AsIsaidthispastweekendwhenIspokeatPekingUniversity,weareverymuchkeepingalloftheminourthoughtsandourprayersatthistremendouslydifficulttime.
Sonow,letmestartbythankingyourPrincipal,PrincipalLiu,andyourclassmate,JuChao,forthatwonderfulintroduction.YourEnglish,JuChao,isexcellent,andyoushouldbeveryproud.Thankyousomuch.(Applause.)AndIwanttothankallofthestudentsheretoday,boththoseofyouhereinpersonandthoseofyoujoiningremotelyfromacrosstheregion.I’mthrilledtobevisitingyourwonderfulschool.
Now,inpreparationforthisvisit,beforeIlefttheU.S.IvisitedtheYuYingSchool.It’sapublicschoolneartheWhiteHouseinWashington,D.C.,andallofthestudentsatthisschoolstudyChinese.AndImetwiththesixth-gradeclass,kidswhoare11and12yearsold.TheyhadrecentlytakenatripheretoChina,andtheywereburstingwithexcitement.Theywereeagertotellmeabouteverythingaboutwhattheyhadseen.

Buttheyadmittedthatbeforetheirtrip,theyhadallkindsofmisconceptionsaboutChina.Theythoughttheywouldseepalacesandtempleseverywheretheywent,butinsteadtheyfoundmassivecitiesfilledwithskyscrapers.Theyweren’tsurethatthey’dlikethefoodhereinChina,buttheyactuallylovedit,andtheylearnedhowtousechopsticks.Andintheend,oneofthestudentstoldme–-andthisishisquote--hesaid,“Cominghomewasreallyexciting,butwasatthesametimesad.”
Now,meetingthesestudentsremindedmethatwhenwelivesofarawayfromeachother,it’seasytodevelopallkindsofmisconceptionsandstereotypes.It’seasytofocusonourdifferences–-howwespeakdifferentlanguagesandeatdifferentfoodsandobservedifferenttraditions.ButasItraveltheworld,andImeetyoungpeoplefromsomanycountries,I’malwaysstruckbyhowmuchmorewehaveincommon.Andthat’sbeenparticularlytrueduringmyvisithereinChina.
Yousee,thetruthisthatIgrewuplikemanyofyou.Mymom,mydad,mybrotherandI,welivedinatinyapartmentinChicago,whichisoneofthelargestcitiesinAmerica.Myfatherworkedatthelocalwaterplant.Andwedidn’thavemuchmoney,butourlittlehomewasburstingwithlove.Everyevening,myfamilywouldlaughandsharestoriesoverdinner.We’dplaycardgamesandhavefunforhours.Andonsummernights,Iremember,whenourapartmentgottoohot,we’dallsleepoutsideonourbackporch.
Familymeanteverythingtous,includingourextendedfamily.Mygrandparentslivednearby,andmyelderlygreatauntandunclelivedintheapartmentdownstairsfromus.Andwhentheirhealthstartedtodeclinemyparentssteppedin,helpingmyuncleshaveanddresseachmorning,dashingdownstairsinthemiddleofthenighttocheckonmyaunt.
Soinmyfamily,likeinsomanyofyourfamilies,wetookcareofeachother.Andwhilewecertainlyweren’trich,myparentshadbigdreamsformeandmybrother.Theyhadonlyahighschooleducationthemselves,buttheyweredeterminedtosendusbothtouniversities.
Sotheypouredalloftheirloveandalloftheirhopeintous,andtheyworkedhard.Theysavedeverypenny.AndIknowthatwasn’teasyforthem,especiallyformyfather.Yousee,myfatherhadaseriousillnesscalledmultiplesclerosis.Andashegotsicker,itgotharderforhimtowalk,andittookhimlongertogetdressedinthemorning.
Butnomatterhowtiredhefelt,nomatterhowmuchpainhewasin,myfatherhardlyevermissedadayofwork,becausehewasdeterminedtogivemeandmybrotherabetterlife.Andeveryday,likesomanyofyou,Ifelttheweightofmyparents’sacrificesonmyshoulders.Everyday,Iwantedtomakethemproud.
SowhilemostAmericankidsattendpublicschoolsneartheirhomes,whenitwastimeformetoattendhighschool,ItookanexamandgotintoaspecialpublichighschoolwhereIcouldgetabettereducation.Buttheschoolwasveryfarfrommyhome,soIhadtogetupearlyeverymorningandrideabusforanhour,sometimesanhourandahalfiftheweatherwasbad.Andeveryafternoon,I’dridethatsamebusbackhomeandthenimmediatelystartmyhomework,oftenstudyinglateintothenight--andsometimesIwouldwakeupat4:

Anditwasn’teasy.ButwheneverIgottiredordiscouraged,Iwouldjustthinkabouthowhardmyparentswereworkingforme.AndIwouldremembersomethingmymotheralwaystoldme–-shesaid:
“Agoodeducationissomethingthatnoonecantakeawayfromyou.”
Andwhenitwastimeformetoapplytouniversity,Ihadmanyoptions,becauseinAmerica,therearemanykindsofuniversities.Therearefour-yearuniversities.Therearetwo-yearcommunitycollegeswhicharelessexpensive.Thereareuniversitieswhereyoutakeclassesatnightwhileworkingduringtheday.Soyoudon’thavetobeatopstudenttoattendauniversity.Andevenifyourparentsdon’thavemuchmoneyoryouliveinatinytowninaruralarea,inAmerica,youcanstillattenduniversity.Andyoucangetscholarshipsandgovernmentloanstohelppayyourtuition.
SoIattendedPrincetonUniversityformyundergraduatedegree,andIwentontoHarvardUniversityformygraduatedegreeinlaw.AndwiththosedegreesIwasabletobecomealawyeratalargelawfirm,andthenIworkedasanexecutiveatacityhospital,andthenIwasthedirectorofanorganizationthathelpeddisadvantagedyoungpeople.
Andmystoryisn’tunusualinAmerica.Someofourmostfamousathletes,likeLeBronJames,andartists,likethesingerJanelleMonae,camefromstrugglingfamilieslikemine,asdomanybusinessleaders–likeHowardSchultz.He’stheheadofacompanycalledStarbucks,whichmanyofyoumayhaveheardof.WhenMr.Schultzwasaboyhisfatherlosthisjob,leavingtheirfamilydestitute.ButMr.Schultzworkedhard.Hegotascholarshiptoauniversity,andeventuallybuiltthelargestcoffeehousecompanyintheworld.
Andthenthere’sthisotherguyIknowwhowasraisedbyasinglemotherwhosometimesstruggledtoaffordfoodfortheirfamily.Butlikeme,thisguygotscholarshipsandloanstoattenduniversities.Hebecamealawyerandaprofessor,andthenhewasastatesenatorandthenanationalsenator.Andthen,hebecamePresidentoftheUnitedStates.ThisguyI’mtalkingaboutismyhusband,BarackObama.(Applause.)
ThesestoriesarethestoriesofsomanyAmericans,andofAmericaitself.BecauseinAmerica,webelievethatnomatterwhereyouliveorhowmuchmoneyyourparentshave,orwhatraceorreligionorethnicityyouare,ifyouworkhardandbelieveinyourself,thenyoushouldhaveachancetosucceed.Wealsobelievethateveryoneisequal,andthatweallhavetherighttosaywhatwethinkandworshipaswechoose,evenwhenothersdon’tlikewhatwesayordon’talwaysagreewithwhatwebelieve.
Nowofcourse,livinguptotheseidealsisn’talwayseasy.Andtherehavebeentimesinourhistorywherewehavefallenshort.Manydecadesago,therewereactuallylawsinAmericathatalloweddiscriminationagainstblackpeoplelikeme,whoareaminorityintheUnitedStates.Butovertime,ordinarycitizensdecidedthatthoselawswereunfair.Sotheyheldpeacefulprotestsandmarches.Theycalledongovernmentofficialstochangethoselaws,andtheyvotedtoelectnewofficialswhosharedtheirviews.
Andslowlybutsurely,Americachanged.Wegotridofthoseunjustlaws.Andtoday,just50yearslater,myhusbandandIarePresidentandFirstLadyoftheUnitedStates.AndthatisreallythestoryofAmerica–-howoverthecourseofourshorthistory,throughsomanytrialsandstruggles,wehavebecomemoreequal,moreinclusive,andmorefree.
AndtodayinAmerica,peopleofeveryrace,religionandethnicitylivetogetherandworktogethertobuildabetterlifefortheirchildrenandgrandchildren.Andintheend,thatdeepyearningtoleavesomethingbetterforthosewhocomeafterus,thatissomethingwealltrulyshare.Infact,there’saChinesesayingthatIlovethatsays,“Toachievetruehappiness,helpthenextgeneration.”
Andlikesomanyofyourparents,myparentssacrificedsomuchsothatIcouldhaveopportunitiestheyneverdreamedof.Andtoday,asamothermyself,Iwantevenmoreopportunitiesformyowndaughters.Butofcourse,asIalwaystellmydaughters,withopportunitiescomeobligations.
Andthatistrueforallofyouaswell.Youallhavetheopportunitytoreceiveaneducationfromthiswonderfulschool,andyouallhaveanobligationtotakethefullestadvantageofthisopportunity.AndIknowthat’sexactlywhatyouallaredoing.
You’rewinningprizesinmathandscience.Here,youarestagingmusicalperformancesaroundtheworld.You’revolunteeringinyourcommunities.Andmanyofyouareworkinghardtogetaneducationyourparentsneverdreamedof.
