ItwasthelasttimeSusanButcherrantheIditarodTrailSledDogRacein1992.Anhourintotherace,Susanandhersleddogteamspeddownahillandcrashedintoafallentree.Althoughhurt,Susancontinuedthedifficultrace.

SusanButcherwasborninCambridge,Massachusetts.InherteensSusanwasgivenaSiberianhuskydogandbecameveryinterestedinhuskiesassleddogs.AfterreadingabouttheIditarodRace,SusanmovedtoAlaska.Sheworkedatseveraljobstoearnmoneytobuyherselfasledandateamofhuskies.Afteryearsofhardworkandtraining,SusanachievedherdreamofracingontheIditarodtrail.
In1978,attheageof24,Susanenteredtheraceforthefirsttimeandbecamethefirstwomantofinishinthetop20.In1982shecameinsecond.In1984shewasleadingherteamacrossafrozenwaterwaywhentheyfellintothewater.HerleaddogmanagedtopullSusanandtheotherdogsoutofdanger.Remarkably,shecameinsecond.
