IntheUnitedStatesandseveralothercountries,2.5millionchildrenplaybaseballinanorganizationcalledLittleLeague.Theyplayonteamsintheirhometowns.Theirparentsandotheradultsinthecommunitycoachorinstructthemandserveasumpirestomakesurethateveryonefollowstherules.Localbusinessesgivemoneyfortheballfieldsandtheuniforms.Localteamscompeteagainsteachotherandthewinnersgettoplayteamsthataremoredistant.Eventually,thetopteamsgototheLittleLeagueWorldSeries.
OnehundredyearsafterAbnerDoubledayinventedbaseballinCooperstown,NewYork,in1839,LittleLeaguegotstartedinPennsylvania.Threemenstartedthegameforneighborhoodboyswithasmallerplayingfieldandfewerinningsthanadultbaseball.LittleLeaguebecamepopularafterWorldWarIIwhenthegamespreadacrosstheUnitedStates.By1955itwasplayedthroughoutNorthAmericaandwithinfiveyearsithadspreadtoEurope.Children’sbaseballreallycaughtoninJapanandTaiwanofChinaandteamsfromthoseareaswontheWorldSeriessevenoutofeightyears.Afterthis,theorganizationtriedbanningforeignteamsfromtheWorldSeries,butthebancametoanendafteroneyear.
