Abstract
【ABSTRACT】ThisstudywillinvestigateandanalyzehowMrLüShuxiangunderstandsandtranslatestheone-actplayTraditionwrittenbyGeorge MiddletonwhichprovedtheviewofNida’sdynamicequivalencetheory.TheauthorwillanalyzetheflexibletranslationsqualitativelyonthebasisofdynamicequivalencetheoryaswellasthecoevaltranslationtheoriesinfluencingMrLüShuxiang,andexploreitspedagogicalimplicationsforthedramatranslation.Wefindthatthedramatranslationisthecombinationof“sensibility”,“reactivity”,and“performativity”,whicharethedifferencesfromotherliteraturetranslation.Theintegrateduseofdynamicequivalenceandtranslationaestheticsprovidesthedeconstructionofthesourcetextanditsreconstructioninthetargettext,whichachievethefundamentalgoalofdramatranslation.Wethinkthecoreofthedramatranslationliesintranslator’sconformitytovariousprinciplestodeconstructthesourcetextandexpressitthroughtargettext,whichmakesthepersonalitiesofcharacters,conflictsinthedramaaswellasitsartificefullyreceivedandenjoyedbytargetaudience.

本研究从奈达的动态对等理论的角度考察和分析了吕叔湘对乔治米德尔顿(George Middleton)的独幕剧——《家教》(Tradition)的理解和翻译。
研究方法主要是以动态对等理论,以及同时代中有影响力的翻译理论为基础,对《家教》译本中灵活变通的语句进行定性分析,并且探讨吕叔湘的翻译对戏剧翻译的启示作用。
通过研究发现,剧本翻译有别于其他文学翻译,具有“直感性”、“诉求性”和“表演性”。
吕叔湘翻译中动态对等和翻译美学的结合与互补解构并用译入语重构了原剧的意象,达到了翻译剧本的根本目的。
本研究认为剧本翻译的核心在于译者遵照各方面要求和原则,全面解构原剧,准确地表达原剧,以使原剧中“人物性格”和“戏剧冲突”等意象及其包含的艺术和审美特质,在译剧中予以再现并被译剧受众所充分接受和欣赏。

1Introduction
1.1Objective
Dramaasanimportantandinterestingkindofartexpressesthecultureofacountry.Afterthe1840s,theChinesepioneersofintellectualsintroducedvariouskindsofthewesterndramas,suchasthosewrittenbyShakespeareandBernardShaw,intoChinatoenlightentheChinesepeople(Li,Feng2004).Althoughittakesonlyafewhoursforeachdramatobeenjoyed,itisstereoscopic,consistingofdifferentelementsofmusic,literature,performance,painting,etc.Inasense,agooddramaisthemicrocosmofthepeople’slifeinagivensociety.So,westerndramahasbecomeanirreplaceablewayforChinesepeopletoknowitsculture.
DuetotheabsenceofMrLüShuxiang’sowntranslationtheory,theauthoristodiscusssomecoevalinfluentialtheoriesinthethesis,namely,YanFu’s“faithfulness,expressiveness,elegance”,FuLei’s“spiritualresemblance”,QianZhongshu’s“sublimationtheory”,whichhaveinfluencedtranslatorsgenerationaftergeneration,includingMrLüShuxiang.
Asoneoftheprevalenttheories,dynamicequivalencewasinventedanddevelopedbyawell-knownAmericanlinguist,EugeneNida.MrLü’stranslationstyleisrichinflexibility,whichinasenseconformstoNida’sdynamicequivalencetheory.Asaresult,thisgreattheorywillbestudiedinthisthesisalongwiththedramatranslationinMrLüShuxiang’sTradition.
Thisthesisisgoingtostudydramatranslation.Then,howcandynamicequivalencebeappliedinpracticaldramatranslation?
WhatisMrLüShuxiang’sapproachtohandlingTraditiontranslationthatisclosetodynamicequivalence?
Whataretheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofdynamicequivalencetheory?

1.2Methodology
Toanyonewhowantstoknowhowtotranslateadramawell,studyingthebestinstanceofdramatranslationbymeansofthemostinfluentialtranslationtheoryisoneofthebestoptions.Andthatiswhatwearegoingtodohereandnow.Hereby,thisthesisistoanalyzeadramatranslationTraditionbyMrLüShuxiang,oneofthegreatlinguistsinChina.ByanalyzingthesentenceschosenamongthetargetlanguagetextundertheguidanceofNida’sdynamicequivalencetranslationtheory,thereaderswillfinditiseasytofindhowthesourcetextissuccessfullyrenderedbyMrLüShuxiang.?
1.3StructureoftheThesis
Inthisthesis,theauthorwillmakeacasestudyonthedramaTradition,whichiswrittenbyGeorge MiddletonandtranslatedbyMrLüShuxiang.ByapplyingNida’sdynamicequivalencetheorytothecasestudy,theauthortriestoanalyzeandexploretranslationstrategyandmethodsemployedindramatranslation.ThewholethesisismadeupoffivechaptersincludingIntroductionandConclusion:
Chapter1istheintroductorypart.
Chapter2isabriefliteraturereview.ItintroducesNida’sdynamicequivalencetheoryasthetheoreticalframeworkforthecasestudy.Theauthorintroducesitindetailwithitscontentsconcluded.
Chapter3simplyintroducesthreeinfluentialtranslationtheories,namely,YanFu’s“faithfulness,expressiveness,elegance”,FuLei’s“spiritualresemblance”,QianZhongshu’s“sublimationtheory”.
Chapter4elaboratesthethreemaintranslationtheorieswhichhadinfluencedLüShuxiang.Besides,MrLüShuxiang’sviewoftranslationwillalsobepresentedinthischapter.
Chapter5playsamajorroleintheresearchasitcarriesoutanin-depthstudyofdramatranslationbyanalyzinganddiscussingthesubtletranslationundertheguidanceofdynamicequivalencetheory,anddemonstratestheresultsoftheinvestigation.
Chapter6servesastheconclusionofthewholethesis,providingsomesuggestionstotheEnglishdramatranslatorsandbringingupwithsomepedagogicalimplications.
2Literaturereview
2.1EugeneNida’sDynamicEquivalenceTheory
Althoughthedefinitionofdynamicequivalencehasarousedfuriousdebates,equivalenceisstillregardedasthecentralissueintranslation.Nidaisnotthefirstpersonwhoputforwardtheconceptofequivalence.Manyfamousscholarsandspecialistshavestudiedthetheoryofequivalenceandtheirshiningpointspromotethedevelopmentandtheenrichmentofthetranslationtheory.Thosescholarsandtheirviewpointsare,forinstance,Jacobson’sequivalenceindifference(1959:
232),Nida’sclosestnaturalequivalence(1964:
159),NidaandTaler’sformalequivalencevs.dynamicequivalence(1982:
200),Wilss’spragmaticequivalence(1982:
3),andBaker’spragmaticequivalence(1992:
217).Thesescholarshavetheirtheoriesdevelopedindifferentstagesandhaveprovidedfruitfulideasforthefurtherstudyonthistopic.
Nidaemphasizedthatweshouldpayattentiontothereceptorsoftranslationaltextsandtrytoconveythethemeandessenceoftheoriginalbook.SothetranslatordealingwithdramashouldnottranslatethedramaverbatimbutconsiderthecheckeredfeaturesandremovethegapsbetweenEnglishandChinese.Thisthesiswilldiscusstheapplicationofdynamicequivalencetheorytodramatranslationfromtheperspectiveofdynamicequivalence,formalcorrespondenceandreceptor’sresponse.
