1.1DefinitionofNews
Beforewegetdowntoexaminingtheculturaldiscrepancyinnewstranslation,itisnecessarytogainmoreknowledgeabouthowtheterm“news”isdefined.
Countlessscholarsbothathomeandabroadinthefieldofjournalismhaveseriouslygivenmanydefinitionsto“news”.Oneofthemostfrequentlyquotedisattributedtoanineteenth-centuryeditorJohnBogart:
“Whenadogbitesaman,thatisnotnews;butwhenamanbitesadog,thatisnews.”Thisman-bites-dogdefinition,thoughseemstobeabsurdatfirstglance,fullyillustratesoneofthewidelyacceptednewsvalues,thatis,theunusual,bizarrenatureofarecentlyhappenedevent.
Theclassicalandemblematicaldefinitionsarelike“Newsisthereportingofanythingtimelythathasimportance,use,orinteresttoaconsiderablenumberofpersonsinapublicationaudience.”,“Newsisafreshreportofevents,facts,oropinionsthatpeopledidnotknowbeforetheyreadyourstory.”,“Newsisanyevent,ideaoropinionthatistimely,thatinterestsoraffectsalargenumberofpeopleinacommunityandthatiscapableofbeingunderstoodbythem.”etc.
ModernmassmediaeditorswouldagreeonthedefinitionofnewsofferedbyCharlesA.Dana,whorantheNewYorkSunform1869to1897.Hesaid“newsisanythingthatinterestsalargepartofthecommunityandhasneverbeenbroughttoitsattentionbefore.”InChina’sacademiccircles,theaccepteddefinitionisthatnewsisthereportingofrecentevents.Butthereseemstobesomethingimportantmissinghere.Obviouslyasoleword“recent”isinsufficienttoclarifythecharacteristicsofnewsfortheeventsonprogressorinfutureareexclusivetothenewsreporting.
Therefore,DictionaryofCanadianEnglishdefinesnewsasfollows:
somethingtoldashavingjusthappened:
informationaboutsomethingthathas,justhappenedorwillhappensoon.
