Computerclubhasremainedinterestingbutchallengingforthestudentsintheweeksprecedingandfollowingthenationalweekvacation.WehavealreadyhadthreeclubmeetingssincereturningtoschoolonSunday,andwehavedividedthattimebetweencontinuingtoimproveourtypingskillsandreviewingwhatwehavealreadylearnedaboutcreatingwebpages.TheclubmembersreallystrugglewithunderstandingtechnicaltermsinEnglish,soaportionoftimeeachmeetingisdedicatedtoreviewingvocabularyandpracticingthestepsonhowtocreateandeditbasichtmldocuments.Someofthestudents,especiallytheyoungerones,havedifficultyrememberingtheexactprocedurebetweenlessons,sowemayneedtocontinuereinforcingthatknowledgebeforewemoveontothenextstage.

Duringthelasttwoweekswehavebeenfocusingoncertainaspectsofdance.Wehavebeenlearninghowtotravel,turn,andspotsowekeepourbalanceanddon'tgetdizzy.Thestudentshaveallworkedveryhardtoperfecttheirtechnique,andarepayingattentiontodetails,suchasthepositionsoftheirarmsandheads.Thequalityoftheirdancinghasimprovedalotsincethebeginningofthesemesterbecausetheyarenowmoreawareofhowtheyaremovingaroundthespace,andhowtheycanusetheirbodiesindifferentways.

InBasketballClub,wehavecontinuedtolearndifferenttechniquesinthegameofbasketball.Wehavepracticeddribbling,passingandofcourse,shootingtheball.Inthelastfewclasses,wehavefocusedoncontrollingtheball,whenpassing,dribblingandshooting.WhathasalsobecomeimportantinBasketballClubisteamworkandthecompleteopposite,friendlyrivalry.Thestudentshavepracticedworkingtogethertomakepointswhileotherstudentsattempttoblockthem.
WehavealsopracticedtheEnglishlanguage,learningthesewords,suchasdribbling,passing,shooting,score,points,andhoop.Thestudentshavelearnedaboutpenaltyshotsandthe3-pointline.Theyhavealsolearnedtheappropriatewaytodribbletheball(without‘traveling’)andhowtoblocksomeonewithoutbeingpenalized.Wehavealsoemphasizedgoodsportsmanshiponthebasketballcourt.
Inthebeginningofeverylesson,theywarmupwithpracticeshotsandweendclassthesameway.Inbetween,wehavevariousexercisesthatteachthemhowtobecomeabetterbasketballplayer-andtojusthavefunwiththegame!

OnSaturdaywereadNemotogetherwithananimatedread-aloudversionofthebook,FindingNemo.ThestudentsfollowedMarvinandDorythroughtheseeintheirsearchofNemo,learningthenamesofthecharactersandvocabularyrelatingtolifeinthesea.Next,thereaderscompletedanactivityworksheetwithmazesandaword-searchpertainingtoFindingNemo.
Monday’slessonwasinbasedinthelibraryandtobeginwiththestudentsreadEnglishbooksoftheirchoice.ThereaderstookturnstoreadaloudtotheEnglishteacherandwerethenallocatedbookssuitedtotheirlevel.
Wednesday’slessonrequiredthestudentstoreflectonthestorieswehavereadsofar.Thegroupisworkingtogethertocreateaboardgamebasedonliterarycharactersandthemes.Thereboardismadeupofacolourfulbackground,eachcolourrepresentingasettingfromastorye.g.thesea(fromFindingNemoandLittleMermaid),theforest(fromTheJungleBookandWinniethePooh),thesavanna(fromLionKing)andotheranimalstories),Wonderland(fromAliceinWonderlandandDr.Seussbooks),Neverland(fromPeterPanandothermagicalstories),desert(fromAladdin)andSnowymountains(fromFrozenandChristmasstories).ThisweekthestudentswereremindedofthestoriesdoneinpreviousweeksanddrewcharacterssuchasElsa,Anna,Clauss,Olaff,Marlin,Nemo,MrRayandSimbaaswellastheicepalacefromFrozen.Thebestpictureswillbeaddedtotheboardgame’sbackgroundeachweeksothatthestudent’scanengagewiththesettingsandcharactersofvariousbooks.

DuringthepastweekwetalkedaboutthemeaningofHalloween.Howiscelebratedandwhen. Wealsolearnednewvocabularywordslikepumpkin,ghost,skeleton,cat,mummy,monsterandspider.Onthefirstweekwedidapaperplatepumpkinwhichthechildrenreallyliked.Inaddition,wedidaPopsiclepumpkin,aghostandamonster. Theyallreallyenjoyedmakingtheirownmonstersandgettingcreative.Also,wedidanorigamiflowerwhichwasreallybeautiful. WewillcontinuemakingHalloweenthemecraftsforthereminderofthemonthincelebrationofHalloween.

ForEnglishcornerthesepasttwoweekswehavebeenheavilypracticingthebasicfootballoffensivetechniques.Mostofthestudentsseemtobeabletoatleastkickastationaryballtowardsthegoalbutmovingtargetsarestillprovingtricky.SothepasttwoweeksIdecidedtotryandimprovetheirabilitieswithregardstohittingamovingtarget.Webeganbywarmingupwithaseriesofpenaltyshoot-outs.FollowingonfromthatIhadthemtryanewgame.ThestudentswouldlineupandIwouldbounceorrolltheballtowardstheirfeet,theirobjectivewastointerceptandkickthemoving footballintothegoal.Thechildrenenjoyedthenewchallengeandwereveryimpressedwithhowhardtheycouldkickamovingfootball.
InadditiontothisIshowedthechildrenthecorrecttechniqueforheaders(hittingtheballwithyourhead).Atfirsttheywerereluctanttotryastheywereworriedtheywouldhurttheirheads butafterdemonstratingitmyselfnumeroustimestheycamearound.Againtheyseemedtoenjoythenoveltyofhittingtheballwiththeirheads,althoughwestillhavesomewaytogobeforethetechniqueisrefinedtotheleveltheycoulduseitinagame.

ThisweekwasourfirstweekbackaftertheschoolholidayssowehadanextrasessionofEnglishcornerthisweek. Thestudentshavebeenimprovingtheirbadmintonskillsandeventheyoungerpupilswhohaveonlyjuststartedplayinghavegottenmuchbetterathittingtheshuttlecock. Iplayedwithsomeoftheyoungeronesandtaughtthemhowtoserve,theyarereallycomingalong.
Wehadaninterestingdilemmainoursecondsessionoftheweekwhenastudenthitashuttlecockhighintotheairandmanagedtogetitstuckinatree!
Afterlotsofjumpingupanddownwemanagedtogetitdownfromthetreewiththeuseofalongstickstrappedtoabroom. Muchamusementwashadbyall!
